Convertible Fury - 1970

I put the tank back in the car over the weekend. After clearing the clogged intake on the sending unit and replacing all the fuel line hose, I am getting 1.5 quarts a minute at the carb, which is 3X what I was getting. It drives much better - it doesn't die after going a mile and it doesn't sputter and die on hills. It stills seems slow and under powered though. I know it is a big car, but it seems like it shouldn't be too much slower than my 318 Barracuda was. It should have about 100 more hp.

I'm attaching this document in case anyone else is interested in it. Lots of good info.

The Cuda probable had a lot less weight and most likely a higher rear axle ratio, both of which would make it "feel" faster.

The green SF in my avatar had a 318 in it. Had over 165K on it and I drove it across the country twice, which obviously included driving up some steep roads. While it wasn't super fast, I don't recall it being THAT under powered. But, as stated above, it's not going to feel as fast as the Barracuda for obvious reasons.

Probably a bit of "subjectve" memory playing tricks. I always remembered my 70 440 as being super fast with awesome acceleration. After I got it back I was a little disappointed, it wan't really super fast, it was just quick. Acceleration on the highway was solid, but not as I remembered it. I spent some time looking at all the work done to ry a figure out where my missing performance went. Eventually it dawned on me that my memories were distorted. Since 2006 I've been driving a Hemi Jeep that does go like a raped ape and it makes the Fury "seem" slower than it really is.

My brother and I had a little test, he drove the Jeep and I the Fury. From standing start the Jeep ate the Fury, but around 50 mph the Fury just hauled *** and slowly left the Jeep behind. I'm pleased!!

The number 3 spark plug is pretty oily. All the others (except 7, which I can't access with my tools) look good. Are piston rings the likely problem?

Here are pics of the bad one and a good one.

Just wind in some new plugs and then find out if the problem continues. If I was to make a guess, you have a leak from the valve cover wetting the outside of the hole to get that liquid oil.

This piece in the very middle looks like it is for holding the spark plug wires. Are there clips that snap into it that then hold the wires?

I had a guy come over that does paint detailing and he did a small patch on the trunk. It turned out great. He'll do the whole car for $400. I'm going to price the equipment and consumables before deciding how to proceed. A fender would also need to be repainted to match.

I had good results bringing back really dull paint using this system and it's not horrible in price. If you're looking for show quality you might want to use different compounds as well as different buffing wheels.

6 Inch Complete Liquid Ice FinishingSystem - Foam Cutting Tools - Finishing System - Eastwood

However, $400 isn't bad if you don't really plan on using the system on other cars, especially if you have to purchase a buffing wheel and that price includes some paint on the fender.

Thanks. That looks like a good option, although the detailer used and recommended a random orbit polisher and that kit appears to be designed for a regular polisher. This car has tons of dents and dings so definitely not looking for show quality, but also don't want to make it worse with an aggressive machine and a lack of skill. The $400 does not include painting the fender, btw.

You can do it by hand too.... There's some great products out there that require some elbow grease.

First I would wash it a couple times with Dawn soap. That will remove a lot of the crap on the finish. Then use a claybar and a mix of Dawn and water and go over the entire car. That should remove a lot more.

Next, you could use a pre-cleaner. You can't go wrong with this stuff: Pre-wax Cleaner » Collinite

The hard work would be done, so finish with this: Insulator Wax » Collinite

There are similar products out there. The Collinite stuff is pretty good though and they have the best chrome polish I've ever used. Insulator Wax » Collinite

John, I really do trust your judgement... but I might have a hard time talking about those products with a straight face... or am I mispronouncing Colon-ite?

I'm removing the rear bumper. Any ideas how much it weighs and any suggestions on which 2 bolts to remove last? It looks like it weighs a lot and I picture it crashing to the ground or on me. Thx.

It's not that heavy, maybe 30-40 lbs If memory serves there are two brackets bolted to the frame rails, two bolts each side. Plus there is the gas tank filler attached to the center of the bumper. Also unplug the tail lights.
