Does anyone know a reputable rear end rebuild shop in northern California, Bay Area?

67 Imp with 742 case sure grip. Has a low speed howl and now things are clunking. I can roll at idle and hear click, crock, clunk every second or couple. I read a first step is just replacing the fluid/additive and see if that improves, but I find that hard to believe it would resolve such severe clunking...is that a worthwhile step??

I found this link on the site; https://www.bigblockmopar.nl/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/MoparSureGripManual.pdf
and I do have the service manual, but I don't have tools beyond the basics. Maybe it's still worth it to buy all the gauges and things but working with precise measurements has never been in my comfort zone.

Anyone rebuilt one of these? Should I give it a go or stick to the safe side of things and find a shop to do it, then any recommendations of a shop?

Sorry for the long post, I get rambling when I type. Thanks in advance!

The only place I know of is/was in Vacaville, and I wouldn't refer you to them as they F-ed up my brothers pig. I do know that there's ton's of specialty shops in Vallejo. Go to the Library and dig through the local Yellow Pages and find something. I got out of that F-ed up state, they left me with a very sour taste, I have no love for anything CA. How the **** can you afford it, and it gets worse everyday? Good Luck

Hey man, were you driving up 18th St. in the city yesterday? A silver IMP just like yours drove past, they noticed my NY'er parked and gave me a passing shout.

As for diff guys, best bet is to find a local guy that does them on the side or out of his house. Two years ago there was a guy peddlin' pumpkins at the Mopar Alley swap meet, and I got his card, but have since misplaced it. I will look again because I need his services. He also sold complete built units.

Any bay area folk know of said dude?

Nope, wasn't me. I haven't been through the city yet. Have stayed in East/North Bays and wine country. Interesting to see another one though! I've seen a 67 sedan in Berkeley a few times, but now I've been trying to track it down to look a some wiring for reference, but can't find him.

I'll give the manual another once over to review my comfort level. Suppose I could just take out the 3rd member and inspect it to see if I can tell what's wrong too. I found a bunch of 'speed' shops north near Santa Rosa I may contact last resort.

There was an old car shop in San Mateo until about a year ago, the guy retired finally. More recently, my favorite shops around here have been disappearing. As prices go up, they get offers they can't refuse to sell it all and retire early.

Let me know who they are, maybe I'll give'm a ring and see if they have any connections up here... worth a shot.
It's actually a "him." He is a professional mechanic, but he races Mopars and does a lot of rear-end work at his home. He rebuilt the third member I have in the Gremlin (Mopar 8.75), and replaced the axle bearings on the rear in my Newport. He's a good man. If you do not find another I'll be glad to send you his number.

That's called networking, good idea. If not, let me know. There's lots of No Cal folks on BBO around your area that might know someone.

Seriously? A guy asks for help and you crap all over his home?

Grow up.

Merry Xmas.

Damn, wrong again. I always miss the brilliant part with you.

An evolutionary dead end I guess.

Would love to see some pics of your Gremlin! My cousin built one years ago in MN, built 440, huge tires, etc... looked like a matchbox car. Was a lot of fun to ride in!

I've posted a number of them on this site. WE stayed with AMC power, used a 401 out of a junked Wagoneer; it's now a 407. Put in a T-10 from a '68 Javelin, and the afore mentioned Mopar 8.75 A Body unit. One of these days we'll paint it. Ha!

First appearance, Spring Fling 2010. Jay Leno loved it!

We have since replaced that ugly crank sprocket.

It's my Son's car. Here he is wiping it down after we arrived at Woodley Park. Car had less than 500 miles on it.
