73 gran fury

Agreed Dave but you never know . Look at the options on his car, loaded up pretty well. If only they knew the right guy when they ordered it

With the fuel shortages that emerged in early 1973, dealers were loath to order cars with big block gas eating engines, so it would usually have been necessary to actually order a fury with the 440 from the factory. The U Code engine, as far as I know was still in the order book. Most 440's were T-Code and were available with the tow package as with this vehicle. If I remember correctly, the U Code was also available with the tow package. This particular vehicle is a low serial number car with an August 1972 production date, so it might well have been a dealer stock vehicle as it would have been built before any gas shortage showed up.

This car was suppose to be a low mileage car. The air cleaner seems to be original for this car but on nicks air cleaners he says this air cleaner should be for a 72 73 400, with the 440 with just a single snorkel.

A U code would have the dual snorkel . Some T codes did too as well

When I decode the fender tag E85 says 440 350hp. Does that decoding website just say all E85 as 350hp? I was using the one on mymopar.

350 Horsepower . The U code would have more horsepower because it is "HP " or "high performance".

Many of the 440 cars had the single snorkel air cleaner, they used a larger snorkel with a flapper valve in it to increase air flow under full throttle operation. These were common on the T and U Code police cruisers. Motor homes and some 440 cars still had dual snorkel air cleaners. I do not know of any good way to tell which is correct for your application. It may have varied as to which production plant the cars were made at. Either has enough air flow for your vehicle.

Most of the 1970's Chrysler archives have been destroyed which makes trying to determine production numbers for the various engine options very difficult.

Very good looking & nicely optioned Fury. I had a 72 Gran Coupe that same color combo. Such a classy looking car.

Regarding the air cleaners, I have often found that with 440 T code engines in Plymouth and Dodge C bodies, they usually had the dual snorkel air cleaners from the factory. Probably it was a way to limit the number of parts on the assembly line. Because few of these cars were ordered with a 440 at all, the factory just installed the police cruiser air cleaner assemblies as the regular production option for T code engines for those cars. My 1973 Dodge Monaco wagon came that way as well.
