New to me 78 NYB on its way but please Don't tell my wife

Corners painted and installed. Found about a yard and a half of red vinyl under the rear seat putting in the speaker. Ended up using speed nuts to hold in trunk lock cover. Trunk lock cover makes a great pull down handle.

Tomorrow..... clean up and detailing starts....this could be a while.

Right front corner. A little dull but I’m going to hit it with a bit of clear.

Left rear same.

Found OEM vinyl under the rear seat.

Speed nuts ended up working a lot better than inserts.

Good tight fit that stands fairly vertical at the face. Very subtle.

Beautiful 190 MB came for a visit to the shop. Same color combo as my NYB..... except for the top.

Even dripping wet... she looks quite handsome

Worked most of the day working the ghosts out of the paint. Long tedious work.

Detail of ghosts.

She’s gone from a 50 footer to a 20 footer today.

Had an idea as to how to get the missing reflector back in even with only two tabs

5/16 “ fuel injection hose just fits in the slot.

Trimmed the ends of the hose “springs” to get them started in the slots. And a little grease and.....

Gentle persuasion and it went in nice and tight with even a little click.

Other side still has a ghosts to work on but I’m pooped.

First pass on car paint

97F40330-D3B7-4DDA-8E9D-AB1A98378DD2.jpeg

Ghost of old rub strip finally gone. Had to do some very careful 2000 wet sanding...but it came out fine.

Worked most of the day on hood and trunk. Had to do some standing work after yesterday.

First half of the hood with 3M polishing compound.

Here’s how much I use with each pass. Using orbital polisher with rag cloth. Rinse after each full application and often. Slower than high speed buffer but much safer on old thin paint.

The rest are views outside in the sun. I needed to get it out to check on paint for next pass. Trunk could use one more pass but the hood only needs some touch ups here and there where it’s still a little cloudy...... very gently.

Lots of little touch up brush work to do. Put a coat of meguirs carnauba wax on the whole car to protect it until I can get back to it.

Next up:

Detailing, interior (that will take a while), top and adjust and polish front bumper to follow.

Interior will require some elbow grease to clean up the leather with a little saddle soap and conditioner. Carpet will need shampooing....after a thorough vacuuming. Door and dash panels and finally windows with some newspaper.

More details.

Passenger side of hood was polished first. Drivers side shows how cloudy the silver paint was looking.

Back of car looking better with both reflectors in but I still think it’s missing something.....

Drivers side mirror decal was perfect as was the passenger side. Used a fine brush to clean out the text after waxing to make it look sharp.

To be authentic, it would be from another state...
Yeah yeah yeah.... I need to go get it registered. That’s what I meant. I have the title.....

As to value.... $2500 is what she cost in her original condition and state.

As she sits now...... I wouldn’t take a penny less than $2550!

Seriously, I haven’t totaled it up but I must have at least another $5k in shipping, parts, tires, outside shop costs for refurbished parts like A/C lines and radiator recore...and Ivan Labor. Hell... I must have spent $150 bucks in just carb rebuild kits.

What she’s actuallly worth is probably no where near the total. But it’s not about the money....

Details, details, details.... a million of them.

Touch up duty on Saturday and interior clean up. Lots of pimples and filth to go

Also, got in the new hood insulation pads.
I’ve been cleaning the underside with every pass for work that took me under the hood since I got her and we’re almost ready for install.

Enjoy the pimples below:

May paint the replacement door to replace this damaged one. Not looking forward to replacing the door.
