I keep my car well- waxed to make sure that rust stays in check. I use mother's California gold. My question is Can I use it on my vinyl top? I see no reason why not, but I figured I would ask because you can't exactly take it off after you put it on.

I personally wouldn't put the wax on there, this is what I use it's designed for it holds up pretty well.

I have used both the meguiar's and 303 products and I recommend both.

We are all on the same page here, actually I forgot about the 303 I think a like it better. Just started using it a couple years ago had used the Meguiars product for years before that.

I have always been told to just clean the vinyl top on my Survivor 68 Sport Fury. I would never but anything but a cleaner/conditioner on it. Adams has a good cleaner as well, although it is expensive.

How long have you had it?

I concur with the cleaner-conditioner approach. The orientation is to replace/replenish the basic "oils" in the vinyl itself. Protectants don't always do that, although blocking the fading (and otherwise "drying") UV light rays.

Do several "Thin" coats, over about a week or so, rather than a big soak.

The OTHER thing is that you're just treating the surface coating of the base fabric backing. The cloth/gauze underlayment of the vinyl could still dry rot with age, but the key thing is to keep moisture out of that fabric layer!

Since the late 1990's, possibly 1999. 80% original paint, original vinyl top, original interior including carpet and I don't think the engine has been apart. Around 92k on her (383). Just going by memory on when I got her.

I have had my yellow '68 Sport Fury since 1993 and the body and paint work on that car was finished in 1998.

Well thank you. You know very well what you are talking about!

I've found the best treatment is a thorough cleaning with spray nine followed with the formula 303. Don't use wax! Most contain paraffins which will dry out the vinyl and take away the colour leaving a white haze.

Waxing a vinyl roof is going to fill all those little cracks and grooves with wax that will turn white, and getting that out will be impossible without chemicals or scrubbing that are bad for the vinyl. Use something that is meant for vinyl.
