Not sure about the transmission code as it was partly obliterated. I tried a '7' and got unknown code, so tried a '3' and got the result shown above. Guess you can see how well it matches the car and determine the accuracy that way.

Online decoders, generally, suck as they are incomplete and unable to distinguish between years and models.

The fender tag is from a 68 New Yorker, actually this car For Sale - 1968 New Yorker
It seems to be an original automatic car, so manual trans decide is probably wrong.

I was mostly wondering if the blue interior war correct.

True, but they get us less informed headed in the right direction. (Still got any 66 parts books to sell?) I use the online decoders as my starting point now, crossing codes with other incomplete online resources. Still leaves gaps but works better than having to wait to ask a guy about codes when he shows up to a car show. :poke:

I've gotten a lot more info in the past year and it's nice to look.at a tag and know what's the car is supposed to have.

True story . . . w/ one caveat, as I've only really looked at 65 tags . . . because that's where my interest lies . . .

Okay, I'll admit it . . . I am, I guess you'd call "a numbers geek". I find exploring these build tags really fascinating. Several days ago I was playing around w/ the numbers from that beautiful blue 65 Custom 880 4HT that was posted in one of the threads (the one that had a picture of the window sticker, as well). Well . . . something was screwy . . . the second line of numbers/letters didn't match up w/ any of my references, or any of the other plates that I've decoded over the years! Didn't match up until . . . I shifted every number after the engine code (AB-99) OVER ONE DIGIT! Yes . . . I don't know the exact procedure which they used to create these tags (I assume it was like a big typewriter which punches out metal numbers) . . . but where the worker was supposed to punch a "space" under "C" . . . he just started to type the sequence of numbers for the correct options, but every one of them one digit off! (I wonder what the IBM card and the build sheets for this car look like, are they correct or not, as I would have thought that they were all created at the same time???)

So, the point of all this - yes, most of the time the build tag gives an accurate record of the car's production. But, like all things MoPar . . . it's not infallible . . . and never say never! So, if the numbers just don't add up . . . something just may have been screwed-up since the day it was built.

I think you are right, jct - plugging in the number '5' brings up an answer of '3 speed automatic'

Yeah, the decoder isn't infallible but it seems pretty darn close. (I, myself, would have never thought that one disfigured number was a '5' so it just goes to show how much help having a lot of additional eyes can prove to be, as well)

I used this same decoder years ago for my 68 Plymouth Fury and once I got the numbers properly lined up (which is the key) the data it came up with pretty much matched what was on my car.
