Hey, Folks... I've got a restoration question. 1968 Sport Fury, power disc brakes (Budd). I'm about to send my brake power booster out to be rebuilt, and I want to confirm the original finish. It looks like it was probably painted black, but I would make sure it wasn't plated or some other finish. Anyone know for sure if these boosters were painted black? A pic from shortly after I got the car home shows some black paint, but also lots of rust. I want to get the finish right while it's being rebuilt, especially if it has to be cad plated, etc.

Thanks!

Clair

The '68 disc brake equipped Mopars have a Bendix dual diaphragm booster and as far as I know they were all painted in non-gloss black for C-Body applications. If you want a restoration quality rebuild, I would suggest: www.boosterdeweyexchange.com as they are probably the best out there and will apply the correct finish.

I would recommend dewey's for the rebuild too. However they don't restore the exterior, they will clean it up and spray it. Mine came back with a gloss black, which I don't care for. I actually ending sanding of the finish and filled in the pitting from rust, with putty and re-sprayed in satin black.

Mine was from a 68 it was originally black.

Thanks, Dave,

That's where I'm heading. If they don't spray it, I'm OK with that, I can handle satin black. I can't handle zinc chromate though, so that's good info. I assume they'd know what to do since they're in the business, but I'd rather know before going in and not leave the choice just up to them.

I'll post pics of what I take off the car, and what I get back.

Be sure to tell them that you want a "factory" finish for a restoration. My recollection for the last one I had done that way is the price should be the same, or really close to it. An alternative would be to request no finish and repaint it yourself.

Got the MC/booster removed yesterday, boxed up and ready to go when i talk to Dewey on Monday. Definitely painted black.

The reinforcement plate on the firewall was very nearly gloss black.

The gasket at the firewall seem to be fairly intact - at least enough to use as a template for another one.

The MC looks like it's probably the original Bendix unit:

I'll have to see what I can do to find a decent rebuilt unit or a kit to rebuild the original.
