Does anyone have instructions or photos for removing the ignition switch lock cylinder? Mine is basically unusable most of the time, the key won't turn unless you jiggle it a lot, sometimes it gets stuck and won't come out. The switch behaves correctly once the lock releases.

Service manual lists how to replace every lock except that one...

These are a PIA to change, see video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSHSPkNfDCg
Ignitions were the same for a lot of years, pretty sure the one in the video should be the same as your '69.

1969 is on the dash, not the steering column....

Basically remove the spanner nut of the dash side (where key goes in)..
It looks like a trim piece with notches..
Pull ing switch from rear of dash..
Unplug wire harness ...
To remove the lock cylinder from switch there is a pin.
If memory serves correctly ,
Put key in and turn to RUN,,
Push pin and pull cylinder from switch...

69 switches one year only and are PITA.
Once switch is removed from dash, put key into run position,
Then with a punch or scew driver press the little button on the side of the switch housiing.
Key cylinder should come out.
Hope this helps.

Thanks - is a pair of screwdrivers on the notched nut enough to get it moving or am I going to have to invest in a special tool? actually I'm wondering now if a watch case back wrench would do it, adjustable pin positions and about the right size.

For replacements I'm seeing NOS or aftermarket versions - it's the type with the longer cylinder right?

Needlenose pliers,or two screwdrivers work.
69 C body cylinders only one year only,A aand B different.
IIRC yes long nose, but I could be wrong.

I can't answer the long/short question, however I must ask you a question based on your last reply. What type of watches are you into? Given that you're in the UK it's probably best to remove the existing switch to confirm which one it is.

All sorts, aside from expensive high end stuff. I've got a load of 30s-40s US art deco pieces, a bunch of huge modern divers from Lithuania, Kickstarter microbrands, Russian stuff. If it looks nice and doesn't cost the earth I'm interested.

I'll take relevant tools to pull the lock when I go on Friday, going to take photos of any dissassembly work because it's proving hard to find any online for specific models.

So happy it's not a column key....

Shoot some lube in there first. Make sure it just isn't just gunked up.

That’s what I was gonna say. A drop of sewing machine oil on the key and put er through its paces. Probably gummed up and dry.

Good call Mr Turboomni.

Already tried - it's pretty crappy, loads of play all over the place, whole cylinder is moving!

Confirmed - it's a long switch, I didn't even have to take it out as it was clear from shining a torch in there once the plastic trim panel was removed - which was easy since it was held on with chewing gum as every screw hole is broken.
