Trying to do a band adjustment TF 727.. best I can tell I need an 8 point socket.. is it 1/4 and the other 5/16?
Can't find one to buy... Is there an alternate way? What about using a wrench? Help

If you can not find an 8pt socket, use the field expedient method. Run the ban adjustment down tight with whatever tool you have that works; 6ft pounds is not very much torque, so snug will be good enough for the band assembly to work once you back off the adjuster the correct number of turns. The 72 inch pound torque figure was something that some old school slide rule engineer probably spent several hours or maybe days trying to figure out what level of torque was enough to get the band seated against the drum. The servo moves enough to more that compensate for any small errors in the adjustment.

Thanks Dave!! You are a savior,... Yeah I bought the torque wrench (20bucks at HF) but the socket was tough... OreillyO, Home Depot etc... No go....

Dave is absolutely right on with his directions. Just snug it up with a wrench/pliers/whatever and back off the suggested number of turns. Works perfectly. The hell with 72 inch pounds and a special socket. :realcrazy:

BTW, I think a 12 point socket will work as well, IIRC.

Snug them with a open end wrench till you can't turn the driveshaft. Loosen til driveshaft just wants to be able to turn then loosen another 3/4-1 full turn hold and lock it down with locknut. Done no need for torque wrench.
Your goal here is to have enough clearance for fluid to get between band and drum as to not burn the friction material, but you need it tight enough to grab and hold the band at engine rpm, without slipping excessively. The low reverse band is not as critical because it never has to grab the drum at speed, unless you are constantly yanking it down into 1st at 30+ mph. Left too loose it can cause the servo piston to pop out of it's bore and stick band on, or break the band because it is a solid style band (not flexible).
Second gear or (kickdown band) is the hardest working piece in the trans it has to grab and stop it's drum to engage second gear from engine RPM.
Most of it's time is spent riding just off the surface of it's drum for miles and miles while you are in 3rd/direct cruising down the highway.

Bingo!!! Tried to adjust the inside adjuster but it never got to the point the driveshaft wouldn't turn..so I did my best with "snug" and back 2 turns... the outside adjuster did as expected with the driveshaft. I was able to drain the TC (got lucky and the drain plug was within an inch of the opening, so not hard to find).. new filter and then a total of 9 quarts of ATF (4 of them "high mileage" from Walmart) plus 24oz of Lucas. BTW the total fluid removed was 5 quarts so maybe I just wasn't reading correctly that it was low?
Well.....it runs great!... I've got a bit of hesitation on take-off so I figure I'm gonna try to adjust the accelerator pump... A world of difference from before on the tranny and I am so very happy. Now, I am feeling a very loose suspension compared to my 68 Newport. In the morning I'm gonna grease up anything and everything that has a fitting. Gonna ditch the 20 year-been-sitting tires (4 very decent used 215/75R15 for 120.00 balanced and mounted) and then decide if I want to get a battery. So far it feels like I just should share between the 2 cars but it is a pain when moving things around.
Anyway, this car has been quite the lesson in patience and persistence and I can finally drive it. The motor runs smooth and has lots of power and the tranny is shifting fine. Me thinks suspension is next...
Oh, and the disk brakes? Fabulous!! Such a difference from the non-power drums on my 68...I think it sold me on doing a conversion at some point.
Thanks a million everyone for your help!!

maybe there is a salvage yard near you that would sell a cheap used battery.

It used to be easy and cheap to find used batteries...now? not so much, especially because there seem to be a ton of options now...anyway, I eventually checked Walmart and a Group 24 is only 49.99. For now, I'm gonna be careful with the budget so, for sure on the tires. And, now that I know the car is viable, some belts and other details. And then there is the suspension.....

If there is an Interstate Battery near you they sell used batteries. Fleet maintenance removals I believe.
