I'm bracing for flogging and the flame... Dumb questions...

Welcome to the ‘68 club. Even though many things look to be the same, between the brands and models of the same years you will be surprised at the uniqueness between them. A parts manual will go a long ways in what parts may fit other models. Body parts and moldings are pretty specific. Drive train and mechanical parts can cross models and years. But don’t always assume. Something as simple as a parking brake cable doesn’t interchange between ‘68 c- bodies.

So how does that work when they never physically looked at the car and signed off on the papers? They didn't do their part, just saying.

Easy. You wreck, the cop does a report. That includes the numbers on the transporter, and the vehicles. U-Haul gets a copy. You lie, you lose. Plus, u-haul actually has people that look for hauls that don't look right. They know what can and can't be hauled.

An example of how to screw yourself: Joe rents a dolly and says he's pulling a Prius. No problem. Except, Joe instead pulls a rear-drive or all-wheel drive car, doesn't pull the driveshaft and instead, puts it in Neutral. This particular car requires the driveshaft be pulled (as does U-Haull). The customer's car catches fire and burns to the ground, and the dolly is melted. The insurance the customer got from U-Haul covers damage to the towed vehicle, its contents and the dolly...except the car wasn't the Prius, it was something different. Too bad, so sad, insurance won't cover any of it, and the customer is on the hook for $3,500 for the dolly.

But hey, you want to play...

Jesus, let it go. You can't stop determined people from doing things their way, and if they get nailed doing something stupid or illegal, it's not your responsibility.
For the record, I'm not renting a U-Haul.

But I probably would if I couldn't borrow a trailer .

Fat Guy, you'll find that threads on this forum drift around a bit. But since the topic went to towing with rented equipment, others asked the question, I answered it. That's the way we do things here. Topics here never stay on what the OP started with. Ever.

If your feelings get hurt easily...this probably isn't the forum to be in. As you said..."Jesus, let it go!"

My fault for pushing the sidebar.

Don't need to answer, but if I rent it, I can't use if for more than the one vehicle, I do have it for 24 hrs? Makes sense you might use it for more than one vehicle. Food for thought.

Back to a Blue '68 Chrysler.

I have no feelings to hurt.

I just need to turn off email notifications lol

Like I said, you takes your chances...

Just for shnitz and giggles, I went to uhauls site and found some interesting news. My Polara, and a Monaco can be towed, but not the Monaco 500 (no listing for a Polara 500) and a '68 Chrysler Newport can also be towed, while a 300 cannot, or "is not recommended for towing". I happened to be looking up weights for my cars while bored, and the Polara and Monaco were just under 4,000 lbs, while the Monaco 500 was just over. So.if it's under two tons dry shipped weight from the factory, Uhaul says it can be towed.

I think the formula is a tad more complicated than that.
Off the site you provided:

Capacity
  • Max load: 5,290 lbs.
  • Gross vehicle weight: 7,500 lbs. max.
  • Empty weight: 2,210 lbs.
Towing vehicle requirements
  • Must be equipped with a hard top if it is an SUV. U-Haul does not allow any type of sport-utility vehicle not equipped with a hard top to tow U-Haul equipment.
  • Tow vehicle and trailer lighting must be operational at all times, day and night. All U-Haul trailers and towing are wired with a 4-way flat light connector.
  • Must weigh at least 3,500 lbs. (curb weight), and must equal or exceed 80% of the combined weight of the trailer (2,210 lbs.) and the vehicle being towed (up to 5,290 lbs.).
  • Must have a towing system that has a 5,000 lbs. minimum weight-carrying rating
  • Must have 1-7/8" or 2" hitch ball (5,000 lbs. minimum)
  • Must not exceed maximum allowable hitch ball height of 25"
  • Must have external mirrors on both sides
  • Must have fully operational lighting
  • Maximum recommended speed is 55 MPH
  • Load trailers heavier in front.
  • Reduce normal driving speed.
  • Wear a seatbelt.

So according to that the Monaco 500 should be good to go. It's under the 5,290lbs, and so long as the tow vehicle has the proper hitch, what's the reason it wouldn't work? Their own requirements show it to be acceptable, does it not?

Hey Grant that is a great looking Magnum! Let me know if you need anything for her. I have essentially rebuilt mine from the ground up now lol. 300000kms and still going strong!

Thanks Graham, yours is looking great. Mine's at 205,000 with the 3.5, not looking so great from the front, needs a new bumper cover, front fender, and the soft aluminum hood has minor hail damage. May as well get one and paint it along with everything else including the small type r, eBay eyelids. I wouldn't be able to hold back on a police style push bar if mine was black like yours, but will with mine. I'll definitely be in touch. Not sure how all those emojiis showed up, can't get rid of them.

Have restored several 67-68s
pull and clean the gas tank
73 C Body disc brakes are a bolt on (for example)
I've even used with non power brakes- work fine- easier to modulate but not for little girls
there are check valve differences in MC's- get it right - size of MC chambers make no difference if you check tour level on a regular basis
put smaller wheel cylinders in the rears or an adjustable portioning valve look for those from an A Body or A Body wagon or whatever
you will have to go to 15 inch wheels 15 x 7 cop car wheels work great
Tilt/ Telescope wheel from an Imperial Fits-, or New Yorker you can shorten as necessary- check the coupling NOW
get some torsion bars from a 76-78 Wagon or PD or Trailer Tow
stock largest was .98-- later go to 1.08 although 1.06 is easier to find- makes a big difference- radial vs bias ply tires and all that
there are aftermarket bars 1.1 I think maybe others- the larger the better
find some good shocks- they are short which makes it tough unless you fab new mounts
changing front sway is expensive- not as necessary with the larger bars unless you are into fast mountain driving or autocross
add a leaf or start with Wagon rear springs and re-arch to get ride height right yours are most likely really sagged
I use full length plastic inter-liners so no stick/ slip
rear sway from a Cordoba is a bolt in (do not do till you do the front bars)
good tires make a big difference- I used CHP take-offs
find a 4 core radiator from a Trailer Tow Wagon
If AC and going to modern Freon 134 fit the largest condenser you can find like from a Full size Van late AC gas is not as efficient
block off the holes in the core support except for cold air to the Air Cleaner
add a valance under the Core support
Add a Thermostatic fan clutch if none now
transgo reprogramming kit in the Tranny and a tranny and a power steering cooler
now think about changing the grille etc- first things first
