Just messing around..... I was thinking about adding a call out for the 440 on my NYB... it being the last year in a passenger car and all.

So I started thinking.... where and how to add it to this elegant machine without being garish or busy.... here is my idea:

Put it on the side marker light in the front. Use BMW 440 script from a 440i and omit the “I”. The angle of the numbers is parallel to the angle in the back of the back of the fixture. Might look nice. Well....

Here it is:

First pass.... need to move the zero over and allign it. I had not pressed them on yet so I could move them.

Pull back to see the quarter panel.... Hmmmmm.... not to busy and looks clean.

Pull back to 3/4 view.... nice and not garish at all. Actually quite subtle and almost disappears inside the chrome frame of the fixture.

This is how the part comes from the dealer... $14.00. I bought two but wanted to see it in the driver side first as that’s how I envisioned it.

Here it is backlit.... reminds me of a FURY III script in the side marker light. Like Mopar would have done it if they though about it.

I know it’s not “correct” but I think it looks quite fine...

They’re stuck on Stan.... Jesus!!!... Relax Mr. two tone Lincoln......

Besides... I think they look cool. I’m going to live with it for a while to try it on.

Bumble bee stripes with peel and stick ventiports would be next..... just for you.

Actually, the Salon top is next....everything I need is almost all in.

Brown 75 Imperial that was being parted out in Ohio... also scored the trunk rear trim panel.

Package arrived on Friday. Dropped it off at the trim shop. We’re opening the box on Wednesday. Can’t wait!!!

I think that is great, as a 72 owner, the Fury in my Gran Coupe front marker light is way cool. I hunted everywhere to get another Fury set for my 72 build. That Fury is a Fury III, but the right side has a Fury II lens, so my buddy called it a Fury 2 1/2! I had a 46 Power Wagon which was a WDX. From an Acura MDX, I took the plastic rear applique, inverted the M and made a WDX, which I placed on the lower rear corner of the door. Way Cool, so I may copy this for my 78. I may mess with it to insert it into the lens, cut up some clear or white plastic, use the 440i as a template. Hmm?

I think it would look better centered on the lens.

I like the idea of it inside the lens... brilliant!

Interesting - rather than on the light, what about above the light, in line with the factory script behind the wheel opening?

Too blocked a design for the 440 vs the script for the New Yorker in my opinion to relate them so closely.

It’s obvious that the original designers thought long and hard about the original design and the placement of the name and all the other considerations. Coming in after them to make a change or add, I don’t want to do anything that might conflict with their original good work.

Names, numbers, trim level call outs and badges are all like jewelry on a car’s design and form. They should inform and add. Not get in the way or detract.

I also thought that the chrome of the cornering light would contain the callout better and be about what’s inside which was why I like @Moseman’s idea above of putting it inside the light. Makes it even more subtle.

I also thought long and hard about the lock cover for the trunk I put on. The design idea came from a 72/73 New Yorker which had one. The original design for the ‘74 Imperial had a huge eagle cover that I honestly thought was... too far from the bumper to be a reminder from the immediate predecessor and previous design tradition. Also, from the rear, you could not see the Brougham shields on the sail panels. So I didn’t see any conflict with reintroducing it on the trunk. Besides, just the lock floating there looked kind of small and lost to me.

Sorry for the tangent but i just wanted to let you all know that I didn't do this lightly.

I’m a designer and sometimes the third version is the best. Thanks to all for your opinions and ideas.
