Good memories. In 1979 Chrysler needed to sell cars to keep alive. My Dad had the option to lease cars and we had a stripped down hamster brown 1979 Dodge Omni as the second car. Since these cars were selling, they took our Omni back and "gave" us a replacement car, this exact New Yorker (only ours had blue leather). Best car ever for teenage drivers. The complimentary Frank Sinatra 8-Track tape stayed in the glove box. After a few weeks, we did not care about the gas mileage (we bought the gas). This was my start on becoming a C-body guy.

DEFINITELY a nice car to drive and enjoy! BUT . . . the 360 2bbl is not very powerful, or at least my '80 Newport 360 2bbl isn't. I think the '79 had a Holley 2245 2bbl rather than the Carter BBD (318 size) carb mine has?

The driver's window glass hitting the center molding when the door closes is not always "hinges", but can be the style of window regulator they used on these cars. Mine has manual windows and there are "marks" on the B-pillar molding.

These cars ride nice and are VERY quiet, road noise wise. I thought those wheel covers were pretty neat, until I found out they were all plastic. A very isolated K-frame similar in concept to what some years of Imperials used.

By the 1979 model year, the "Lean Burn" had morphed into "Electric Spark Control". Looks like that car is unmolested and all intact. The a/c on my '80 works quick and great, even in a TX summer.

Pretty neat cars, from what I've seen. Some issues where Chrysler tried to save a little money, though.

Just some observations,

On first glance, sounds reasonable. Would be nice if it had a new set of Michelins on it for that price. Mileage?

I spent a lot of hours behind the wheels of R body NY and Newports. Newports lasted far better than the NY in the rust belt in my experience. Worst draw back to restoring these is the Aluminum bumpers...nobody will touch them (at least no chrome I found). The best thing I could find was a shop willing to polish and anodize them.

We had the wire wheel covers, which were a pain to clean. The only issue we did not like is in the rain, water would run along the edge of the rear vinyl top so when you open the rear door, a stream of water would drip onto the edge of the rear seat. The acceleration with the 360 V-8 was better than the 4 banger in the Omni and it was quiet and smooth.

Had forgotten about the chromed aluminum bumpers. BUT there were chromed aluminum wheels (which started life as normal aluminum wheels, like for Corvettes and such) in that era too.

The '75-'77 Camaros had aluminum bumpers, too, but they were anodized. The "re-runs" were polished and just didn't look right on those particular cars. On the Chrysler, possibly polished and clear-coated would work decently well? At this point in time, though, the nice flexible bumper fillers/surrounds would be more of an issue.

At 100K miles, put a timing chain in it and enjoy!

My '80 Newport 360 2bbl had seen a "rougher" life, being titled to an oil field tool company in Midland, TX. The dealer (then out of business) who ordered it ordered it for such service. 360 2bbl V-8, AM/FM radio, HD suspension, etc. It had a set of Midas air shocks and a home-made hitch on it when I got it. It has seen some "off-road" use, as evidenced by the center part of the y-pipe, which had apparently "met a fate" and was beat/welded into a 1.25" square in the middle of the oil pan area. The rear air shocks saved the rear springs, apparently.

It had a carb issue which I finally tracked-town and fixed. Scored a factory dual system from a wrecked 360 4bbl car. Added the 15x7 Magnum GT wheels and trim rings. Looked like a possible TX Game Warden car (the same color) from the rear (wide wheels/tires, dual exh). I was surprised how quiet it was inside. Then I discovered the 3" of insulation under the thick carpet. So, a different equipment combination can make a pretty decent car!

Only trouble area was the lockup torque converter/front pump splines. If they don't have a good heat-treat, they'll wear and "spin out" suddenly. Happened twice, both times near the house, so I could walk home and get another car to drive, as the wrecker came to take the car to the trans shop.

The one other forgotten-about aluminum part on those cars was the wheels on the Cordoba 300s. 15x6 aluminums to which an ornament and center cap provisions was added to that went around the outside of the rim area. Only thing was they were too narrow for the GR60-15 tires that went onto them!

My '79 New Yorker has no problems with front/rear bumpers but has not been driven in winter. My mechanic neighbor put a new front seat and oil pan gasket. I asked him of the condition of the timing chain and debris in the oil pan. The car has now alittle over 100,000 miles on it but he said the oil pan was free of sludge etc and looked like a car with two thirds less miles. Yes the car needed a drip rail edge but "it is what it is". Typical mpg is 16 where my '78 New Yorker gets 14 mpg. The is a noticeable difference between the cars and both can appreciated for what they are.
