Mopar key question

68 Fury. My first Chrysler product ever.

My keys fit ignition and trunk but not the door locks. Is this normal? A separate key for the doors?

Thanks for answers. I am considering having a locksmith make door keys, or buying new cylinders.

Usually the ignition and doors are one key (squarish) and the trunk and glove box used a separate round head key. My guess some locks have been changed over time.

From the factory for 1968 the ignition key fits the door locks.
Trunk fits the glovebox.
I am guessing someone replaced the ignition switch with a key included.
No locksmith needed.
You can get complete kits on e bay.

If you have a good locksmith they can re- key the door cylinders with your ingnition key. You will have to take your cylinders out.
I actually need to take my glove box tumbler in and get it keyed.

I was lucky to score NOS trunk/glovebox kit over ten years ago real cheap.
My original trunk lock was opened by Al Bundy's screwdriver..
The ignition keys are factory original so are the door locks.
Key chains are NOS

It would be easier to take the ignition lock cylinder out and have it keyed to match the doors instead of the other way around.

Also, it is more likely that the door lock are original to the car than the ignition, so it would be closer to original to match the door locks.

Not too sure about 1968, but you may find that the glove box lock will work with any round-head trunk key.

The difference in the key blanks (the shank area) is where the horizontal grooves are located, plus their width. Those MUST match the key cylinder housing or they won't go in. Locksmiths can't alter that situation.

What a locksmith CAN alter is the "code" of the cuts on the key itself. Which much match the particular arrangement of the tumblers in the key cylinder housing.

IF you can get some cylinders already key'd, that's the least expensive way to go. Then get some OEM blanks to match these new items and you're done.

MANY places to get key'd cylinders. RockAuto, local chain auto supply, or eBay. If the local chain auto supply can order them for you, that could be a good as using an online vendor, time-wise, I suspect. Door cylinders usually come in pairs. Ign cylinder might be separate, as might the trunk cylinder. So, getting a complete set from one place might be best, all things considered.

I know on my stepdads S/23, it was the same thing as your situation. His keys started the car, and opened the trunk but didn't open the doors when they were locked. The locks were wrong. I wonder about the locks. When I got the car, the lock for the trunk was missing the piece of metal that holds tension on the lock cylinder. Not sure.

Best get them all sorted out so that's another issue off your list, locks and keys that all work.
