Cross Country Coronet: A Long Drive--Autoweek Article

When I got my 300 at Mecum Indy last year, I considered--for about 27 seconds--driving the 900+ miles back to Ponte Vedra, Florida. Then I went over to the transport guys.....

Very cool....would do that in a heart beat! My daughter(s) want to do the Hot rod power tour in the old wagon one day....would be quite the adventure with probably 3000 miles clocked on the ol' beast.

As noted in my thread ,I had a blast last year driving the BoaB racking up the miles!
Can't wait to hit the highway again this summer!

I bought my 1978 Dodge Magnum in the summer of 2017 and drove it from Brookfield Wisconsin to Bangor Maine. Good time!

No sense of adventure.

LOL! It would have never made.

When the transport arrived at my house, the car wouldn't start and was leaking gas from the RUBBER hose from the tank to the carb. And the carb was filled with crud...had to rebuild it to get the car to start to back it off the truck. And the battery was some tiny crappola thing....wouldn't crank the car until I dashed up the street and bought one. Took hours to get the thing landed in my driveway. Believe me, that's enough adventure for my tastes!

But it's alllllll much better now. Everything works like da bizzness.

My Magnum story......
26 years ago this past January I left my home of Newfoundland to seek a better future in Ontario.
My friend and I shared expenses while driving his 78 Magnum XE 360 2bbl auto. Black red guts buckets floor shift and T-tops. A cool car even then despite having high mileage, second motor and third transmission.
Typically the drive including the ferry ride takes a couple days.
It was winter and the windshield washers did not work. My job as a passenger was to hop out and throw snow on the windshield when pulled over. Or pour washer fluid down the glass when driving.
About 40 miles east of Quebec we saw smoke behind us. Getting of the highway the trans was slipping and shifting funny.
Front pump seal went.
We both bought a total of 8 bottles of trans fluid.
The fluid leaked on the exhaust crossover pipe and smoked plumed behind us.
When the smoke stopped,we stopped to fill the trans. Once up in 3rd gear and at highway speed the trans worked fine and got us to Ontario. My buddy two weeks later rolled the car hitting a median off ramp after a night of partying.

Mine's kinda warped so it LOOKS a little open. :BangHead:

Some previous care taker close something in the trunk that didn't fit Trace? Theirz ah fix for that. It involves someone that iz good with Fiber Glass Repair and It'z all done from the under side. Correspond privately if you're interested, Jer

No, not interested, thanks. Frankly, I'm thrilled that it's in the condition it is in. I have quite a bit of info regarding the horrendous warping of those all-fiberglass decklids back then, including the car that's trying to sell for $89K lately....the original owner came to blows twice with Chrysler in 72 (replaced), and again in 74 (repaired by a boat glass expert assigned by Chrysler). From the look of my bolts on that side, the second owner/restorer has been working for YEARS to adjust it, to no avail. I'm leaving well enough alone.

And besides, what could someone possibly put in that trunk that wouldn't allow the lid to close? A small tractor or somesuch? :D

Wow, that brings back memories....in 1977 my friend drove a '64 Impala SS (red w/blk nylon top and silver vinyl interior) and it did not have w/w washers so when we went to Milwaukee he would pull over and I threw snow on the windshield.
