Who has auto pilot, do you like it?

I have always been interested in the auto pilot. I have a 66 300. How well did they functioned back then, I hate a cruise control that pulsates? I am also interested if they are serviceable, and if they are, can they be bench tested.

Thanks

They work real well when working, and you can also set it without locking it on to use the gas pedal as almost a footrest, it'll not hold the speed when you lift. Ross is the man on these things. @Ross Wooldridge

The control unit is essentially a flyweight governor, you input your desired speed via a geared knob on the dash which sets the 'hold' point of the governor. When you reach the desired speed the governor resists further travel of the gas pedal although you can overcome it by pushing a little harder. Also, when you reach the desired speed there's another knob to pull out which engages a solenoid to lock the pedal linkage to the governor to hold the set speed. It's fairly complex appearing with actual physical linkage from the gas pedal to the control unit, but operation is actually not that high tech.

I have it, & love it. The system needs periodic servicing to remain in optimum working condition, and I do know a lot about them.

They can't really be bench tested, but are fairly easily assessed and bench serviced.

The dash dials from 65 and up were made with cheaper materials than the 58-64 and hence break, however I have a $75 fix for those I guarantee for life. Not saying it won't break again, but if it does I'll fix it for free (less shipping).

I can service and deal with some of the ingerent issues in the underhood control servo, but shipping is a killer on those.

Thanks everyone and thanks Ross for the insight and the vote of confidence of the system.

Before I get too far into this can I add a dial to my dash and can the earlier dial dash be found or am I better off finding a broken one and sending it to you to fix?

Yes, you can retrofit the dial into your dash, but know that the earlier 64 and down dash dial won't fit. The dial is specific to 65-66 Chrysler, as are the bracketry and linkage rods underhood.

I would highly recommend you find a 65/66 Chrysler and grab all of it, and I can help you get it functional. Almost every dash dial will be broken from age issues, even NOS ones.

Other issues crop up too with the linkage when one converts to a dual reservoir braking system. I have all those solutions worked out too.

PM me when it's time.

This is great thanks Ross, I will begin my search for parts.

Ahhh - while the control head will interchange, not much else would for @Zymurgy unfortunately. Bracketry, linkage rods, all slightly different. Wiring harness might be the same, control cable might be the same, but is likely different.

I was hoping you'd say 65 or 66 Fury - I'd buy the dash dial from you!

Have you ever seen this after market unit?
