Direction of speedometer gear seal

Can someone tell me which way the seal goes in for the speedometer gear seal. Does the flat side go point toward the gear , or away from it

General rule of thumb is that if you are sealing oil in the lip always goes towards the oil side. If it is being used as a dust seal the lip goes out.

So then the flat side with the numbers go outside ?
