1972 Fury III 360 101498 miles

have used precision myself and don't know that there's ever been a problem. in doing front end work 've taken a lot of moog parts off and thrown 'em in the trash. with a choice of greaseable or non-greaseable u-joints, 've always gone with non. think the seals are better. too bad about the spicers, they are the best.
 
U-Bolts, Remove & Clean
· Oil RS & LS U-Bolt threads. ¾ ls, ½ R, then ¾ ls & ss with impact gun.
· Keep loosening, oiling threads above nut, tightening, loosening until nuts come off. Pry bar to remove u-bolts.

Bolt Head Side. Nut to outside, WD40 on nut, 15/16 ss, ½ bb and R. 15/16 wr on bolt at inside. My plan: will be reversed. Bolt head on outside, can remove bolt and remove spring. Bolt head on inside, must remove front mount with spring.

What ratio is the old axle?
Hey Gary, old 8.25 axle is 2.71. 8.75 New is 2.76.
car was in good shape underneath to begin with. on any n.e. car none of that would have come apart without help from my oxy/acetylene friend.
How about this, Rags: the 4 insulators for the axle mounts on the leaf springs came off undamaged.
(Late work day, but did get to do some wire wheel cleaning with wire wheel on my 6" buffer and also using vise, drill, and wire wheels)

Still have to clean all the rust slag off the leaf springs and rear mounts, but getting closer to paint and reassemble.
 
Spring Cleaning
· 2 hours wire wheel on drill cleaning both leaf springs on outside worktable.
· Wipe down with rags and place on work table in garage.

getting to be a fan of por-15. they use the stuff where i work. someone spilled some on the floor then someone else drove over it and got it on a tire. we now have por-15 spots heading out of the building and through the parking lot. not possible to have a less prepared surface but the stuff won't come off.

Still on work bench: brake backing plate mounting flanges, POR 15, 2 coats. Clean first with die grinder and Roloc medium grit pads.

Parking Brake Cables: POR 15, 2 coats, from brake backing plates to bracket behind adjuster. First, Cleaned right side cable with Marine Clean to remove grease. Then, Wiped both cables down to remove loose rust particles. Then Paint.

Fuel Tank Sending Unit:

Clean old fuel hose and 4 vent hoses, Marine Clean and rags. Hoses look like they were covered with a white chemical salt, probably from Indiana roads. Car spent 2-3 years there, though originally from Oregon.

Issue: intermittent Signal, so sometimes Fuel Gauge reads empty, next turn of key 3/4 full. In first pic, you can see how fuel tank sending unit (FTSU) grounds, strap from from fuel tank sending unit outlet pipe, across fuel hose, to metal fuel line. Rust is a big issue with these straps. 2nd pic, see rust in both contact areas. 2 terminal connector with a ground in trunk would have been better idea.

Sanded: 60 grit sandpaper to sand rust off the bottom of the pipe.

FTSU Ground: drilled 5/32 hole in rubber grommet @ right side of grommet for fuel tank sending wire. Run black wire through the hole in the grommet, starting on the trunk side.

Strip end of ground wire for ½ inch. Clamp to bottom of fuel tank sending unit outlet pipe, aircraft clamp, ¼ short socket, 6 inch extension, ¼ ratchet.

Fuel Hose: replaced with new 5/16 inch ID fuel hose. Installed 2 new fuel hose clamps, 9/32 short socket, 6 inch extension, ¼ ratchet.

Drill 5/16 inch hole 3 inches above the 2 grommets. sand the trunk side of this area using 60 grit sandpaper. 5/16 inch ring connector on ground wire. Ran 5/16 inch thread bolt through ring terminal and through hole in trunk pan, again from trunk side. Helper held ½ inch wrench on bolt head. I attached nut from below, using ½ inch wrench. Painted bolt head area and nut area, 2 coats, POR 15, gloss black. Spare tire hides this. Not sure if it works yet. Battery disconnected now. Brake pedal actuated to keep master cylinder from draining. Brake lights would be on.

8.75 Axle Install

· Leaf Springs and Front mounts/hangers: assemble loose on work table. Front mounts have horizontal edge facing up, angle edge faces down. Run bolt through from the outside, nut at inside, hand tight. (Front Mount: POR 15 had closed up the boltholes slightly. Half inch drill and appropriate sized bit to drill out the paint, so Bolt could go through.) Bolt goes through front mount, through spring eye, through front mount, nut on the inside.

· Leaf Springs: cardboard on floor, so center portion of leaf spring can rest on floor without getting scratched. Family helped while I guided the studs of the front mount through the mounting holes in the subframe. Attached nuts on front side, opposite side of subframe, 9/16 long socket (ls), 3/8 ratchet (R), leave slightly loose, so leaf spring can be moved to match position of axle. Did left side and right side the same way.
· 8.75 axle: we carried the axle from the workbench in the garage out to the jack which was behind the Fury. I had a green towel over the jack saddle. Family were at the axle shaft mounting flanges of the axle housing making sure it stayed level. Another family member held up the nose of the axle from under the car while I pushed the hydraulic Jack under the car. As I got under the wheel well, lifted axle and continued to move forward until it was positioned over top of the mounting studs on the Leaf Springs.

· Leaf spring mount for the axle housing has a lower metal mount, which is also the shock mount, then there’s a lower rubber insulator that goes on the stud at the bottom of leaf spring, then there is a matching rubber insulator that goes on the stud above the leaf spring, then there is another metal piece which goes over the upper insulator and centers on a circular rubber protrusion at the top of that insulator. The axle has a large circular hole in its mount which goes over the flanged area of this metal mount that goes around the circular rubber portion of the insulator.
· U-bolt’s mount over the axle and through both metal pieces. They are parallel to the sides of the car. Attached nuts with heavy-duty washers. Tighten evenly, ¾ long socket, ½ ratchet. Did not final torque. Left slightly loose to give play in the assembly so that the rear shackles and rear mounts could be put into position.
· Getting these spring perches for the axle lined up properly requires lots of movements and adjustment. It’s also handy to have a hammer and a block of wood to tap the U-bolt’s back into vertical position if they move and cant to the outside.

· Rear shackles and rear mounts: lift axle at center using hydraulic Jack. Shackles fold and look like 2 ends of a scissor close together. The open scissor is above the level of the rear of the leaf spring. Move the rear mount portion to flush with the subframe/torque box and its 3 mounting holes. Install 3 bolts through rear mount, each side. 9/16 long socket, 3/8 ratchet, leave slightly loose.
Torque:
· Front Mount/Hanger Nuts. RS in pic. Both sides: 30-30 foot-pounds, 9/16 ls, 3/8 R & TW

If you’re like me, and you do have some help cause this ain’t a job you want to do by yourself, 3.5 hours is probably a decent estimate on time.

90? Ugh, I'm tired for you! I've been busy working at work, not just relaxing, but I've been following your refreshing, looks good!

How thick is the Por-15? On my phone with the small pictures, it looks kinda heavy, or thick. Maybe just the texture of it?

I get to replace my springs in the Polara 500 soon, I'll have to paint my axle, as it has some funky green on the back of it. I don't know if I'll be as detailed as you. :poke:

One thing I like about your repairs, is the way you approach them, one thing at a time. I'm usually all over the place doing this, then think of that, and also go off and do the other, I could use a project manager. :realcrazy:
 
Job took about 3.5 hours.
it's not the diff. install olympics. no one got hurt. you took the time to do it right. everything's installed and torqued correctly so nothing will loosen or snap off while the vehicle's being operated. job well done. edit: for safety, the nuts on the u-bolts should be re-torqued after the vehicle is driven. my conscience wouldn't let that go unsaid.

5-21-19 Brakes
Axle Housing: wipe mounting surface and install FelPro 55032 over 5 studs. Install evenly, or metal gasket hangs up and you get a bend. LS in pic

Brake Hose: install on brass junction, Remove junction from axle 1st. Vise-grip & rag on junction, 5/8 line wrench on brake hose fitting. Hose side of junction faces right front to keep hose away from exhaust and shock.

Install LS & RS brake line fittings on BBP, loose, 3/8 wrench. BBP loose on housing studs so can move slightly to match outside line fitting.

Air Vent Fitting @ Brass Brake Junction: tighten with adj wrench. Small amount of torque. Hollow fitting can break.
Brake Lines: hold against axle while tighten fittings at both ends, 3/8 wrench and line wrench. RS line lift into metal clip at top rear center of axle housing. Tap clip closed with hammer and punch.

Brake Hose: twisted 180. Hose only goes on front brake of brake junction one way. WD40 front hose fitting and line fitting. Leave to soak overnight.
