NOT MINE
1968 Plymouth VIP

Located in Parrottsville, Tn.
1968 Plymouth VIP with the 440 super Commando special order option. This car comes with the 727 torqueflite, brand new American Racing torque thrust rims with larger tires on the back than in the front to give it a great stance.
This car is Arrow straight and runs down the road perfect. It needs nothing mechanically, has one little rust spot around the rear window which can be seen in the photos and the video of the car running.
This is a super rare car that comes with the original certificate of origin, window sticker, bill of sale, owners manual, and a mountain of paperwork documenting the mileage on the car, which is believed to be only 45,000 original miles.
This car has power windows, power brakes, power driver seat, air conditioning, leather interior and sports the fast top. Again, this car was a special order with the 440 super Commando engine.
It does it not smoke tick or leak. It comes with a full set of extra rotors and the original 4 Barrel carburetor that came on it. And many other parts that are usable. If you're looking for a super rare Mopar with an original 440 super Commando in it, you really need to come and look at this car! Contact me at show contact info with any questions. I have a video of it running if interested.
$16,500 or best cash offer in person!

Looks to me like a very nice car.
Hate the traction bars and red-painted rear drums, but that's easily undone.
Not a color I would choose but it's very regal, and very shiny. The overspray on the underhood stuff doesn't fit the apparent quality of the repaint, though.
And I wonder about he little rust spot at the rear window? Is this part of it?

I saw something in his listing that I simply did not believe, however the window sticker confirms it - LEATHER!
I didn't know you could get leather outside of an Imp, certain New Yorkers, and certain Charger/E-body packages.

Question - is this the correct air cleaner? Should it have an oval dual-snorkel? Or the smaller-diameter unsilenced that we 68 B-bodies would have? It seems this might be the 2nd or 3rd 440 Fury I've seen with this large A-Cuda style air cleaner and it looks so foreign to me.

If someone had bet me that Plymouth offered a leather interior on one of their models, I would have lost that bet too.

That car is indeed a very impressive Plymouth (VIP) with the caveats you mention.

The only other negative is that it has the very first year version of Autotemp 1, usually a nightmare to keep operating. The listing claims everything works except the clock. If the autotemp 1 really does work, it would be one of very few that does. I am not seeing the usual ATC water temperature control valve under the hood - at least it isn't in the same place as the 1969-70 versions if there is one or it could be hidden behind the hoses. Maybe the owner converted it to a manual a/c system. If so, that would actually be another plus for anyone wanting to buy that car.

Of the roof options available on slabsides, the fastback roof as on that example is my favorite. I also really like the instrument panel style on the 67 and 68 Plymouths.

I want this car! I can't afford this car.

As a '68 Fury collector since 1992, a current owner of a '68 VIP and the owner of a VIP 4-door until 2 years ago I can confirm that leather was an option, a VERY rare option.

As noted above, the under the hood paint leaves much to be desired. With the flat black paint on the lower cowl and Chevy color trunk spatter paint I would say that a GM orientated shop did the paint work on the car.

Being a factory disc brake car it would have had the 15" wheel covers. It also has the deluxe steering wheel, a rarely seen option that my VIP also has.

Wow. That's what I've been waiting to find. My Dad would bring these home from the dealership when I was a kid. Would drive a particular 2 lane state highway that was like a roller coaster, with hills going up and down to his boyhood home and have my face out the window (like a dog). Those fender turn signals still fascinate me.

A great loaded car! A real beauty. Leather int was a surprise. I was was wondering why someone would order such a loaded Plymouth, then I studied the window sticker and noticed one of the line items says "dealer demonstrator". The Chrysler dealer in my hometown used to order a dealer demonstrator Imperial for his wife every year. It wouldn't surprise me if this Plymouth was used in the same manner.

First about the air cleaner, with all the high prices for proper air cleaners I've been bending my mind as to what I had on my stock 2nd 1968 PK21 440 Super Commando, seem to be this non-snorkel one which didn't stay on the car long as I had a fresh air 4bbl one to put on and as being a teenager ya just had to have to have something to impress when you opened the hood down at the high school.

I seem to remember using the original non-snorkel top to sort out nuts & bolts and clean small parts with Gunk <gasp> back in the day. Can't remember what happened with it or the pie tin, maybe traded it for something.

Traction Bars and the window sticker leads me believe that no HD rear springs are on the car, but HD springs kind of defeats the 'VIP' floating luxo-barge feel anyways.

Leather is nice, don't know much 'bout that other than the car is missing the much needed dual headrest option... <detmatt> :poke: he he.

Kind of wonder about the different color headliner and rear window area water leakage/rust/trunk re-spray and would need close eyes on.

Also engine compartment is a little too road grimey for a 45k car IMHO but that's little concern if the sheet metal & undercarriage are solid. seller kind of shoots himself in the foot with "well documented" & "is believed" what is it? Really? or you believe? Maybe not really well documented, never the less a must see car.

:thumbsup::thumbsup: again

Been there. Today. Yes I am considering it, with decision to seller tomorrow aftnoon. Sellers are good people in my opinion - squareshooters. Yes, if you PM me I can give a more detailed report on this car.

Brief observations tho.

Real SuperCommando car. 3:23 open diff. Stone cold, 3 pumps, started right up. Car is straight. Seats are leather -- almost look to good to be true, but seams are straight and I saw no evidence of a redo.

Repaint is represented as two decades old .. but it was done everywhere (jambs, underhood/deck, inner fenders, firewall) .. not perfect but real good base/clear job and that metallic color pops in sunlight. Underside pristine -- original undercoating intact, no evidence of repair//issues anywhere.

Dual exhaust, correct tail pipes, mellow sound. Traction bars were not on it anymore, but does have AM rear anti-sway bar.

Paper trail (repair/purchase receipts_ to document mileage is extensive/persuasive. Two owners before current owners. Fender codes match window sticker.

Originally a QQ1 car (Bright Blue Metallic), probably looked a lot the brochure car.

Summary: I have never seen an L-code VIP. Of course they existed but I have no sense of the numbers built. My guess would be "not many" were built, and whatever number did leave the factory, only single digit percentages remain. Its a sweet ride all around, a few things it needs, but sure to draw an emotional response ("good and bad") wherever it goes.

Different/related. Car is in Eastern TN. Appalachian Foot Hills. From a distance, you'd swear nothing is up in these mountains. A LOT of homes up in there.

Seller meet me and lead me back into the woods.

So many cool sights (old wooden barns less that 15 feet from the road, wide green fields, green moutains/little hills of course all around .. one lane road through tree canopies so dense, my dash lights came on at 11am on a sunny day. I couldnt stop and take pics .. had to pay attention to the curves/bends.

These pics are from sellers backyard .. he hogged out private roads (not shown below) through his property to private recreation areas (fire pits, etc.). A bit too far from civilization to me, it's just beautiful country to me. :)

Amazingly straight. I would drive it without fixing those spots around the back window. Unless it's out in the elements they're not likely to get much worse. Too bad about the color change though.

Well to be perfectly honest, in my humble opinion, without offending anyone who thinks differently from my point of view, but also looking into this matter in a different perspective and without being condemning of one's view's and by trying to make it objectified, and by considering each and everyone's opinion, I honestly believe that I completely forgot what I was going to say.

OH YEA... HOLD THE DAMN PHONE SIDEWAYS!

Seen this a lot on FB recently, are we going backwards?

Agreed, we're so ever-increasingly dependant on convenience that we cannot turn our wrist to take good pictures.

That VIP in the brochure has always been a fantasy car for me to find.
Interesting that this one was originally like that.
Still a nice car, but the color change is unfortunate, esp with the underhood being done poorly.
