It finally happened after 7 years

We dropped the hammer (or drills) and added a front deck
We have a few more pieces to add to complete the project thanks to my younger brother doing 99% of the work with me acting as supervisor

I chose to use composite decking for a next to zero maintenance and using the newer screw pile jacks for future levelling requirements as needed
The deck is near the max height that meets local code but we are going to add a railing for additional safety for any drunken friends that may be inclined to take an unplanned step off the top into my wife’s garden

Nice. That's composite decking, right? We installed a replacement deck last summer went from 8x10 to 12x16, huge (no pun intended) difference to an outdoor space.

Yes
It’s the Trex Select decking

Mrs. Big John's house (before we married) had a Trex covered deck. She worked for a distributor and got it for cost. Good stuff, but her's was an early version that had shallow grooves in it. If it got wet and froze, it was treacherous to walk on. It wasn't a matter of if you were going on your ***... You were going on your *** and without warning. The grooves in the surface filled with water and wouldn't drain out.

I hated walking across in the winter.

I believe they don't sell that type of Trex anymore.

I asked about this and was assured that the deck pattern is designed to provide traction in all wet conditions but I plan to block the deck off in the winter
We have a lower main door so this is a secondary entrance as well

Looks great! Landscaping and everything. A sturdy railing would definitely be in order.

Enjoy!

Looks great Tom, you will get many years of maintenance free enjoy.

My wood deck has to be done every other year to keep it protected and looking nice. Wish I knew a good painter. :)

Nice low key design suits the front of your house. :thumbsup:The only thing that would improve those pics is to have your old cars parked in the driveway.

I found pictures of the before.
We had sanitary sewer work completed this year and of course it ran straight out underneath so we had to have the concrete slab removed allowing access to the lateral sewer pipe that was broken off at the foundation.
I had a sewer water back flow valve added to prevent storm back flow since I found out the area I live in is prone to sewer explosions due to the storm & sanitary systems being interconnected in our area.
I also had a new sump system added while the contractor was on site.
We got lucky that the original sewer lateral was a 6" cast pipe and they were able to slip a 4" plastic pipe into the original pipe all the way to the street removing the need to dig all the way to the city portion of the pipe A bonus for sure saving a good portion of the front lawn.

The city helped with the cost of that part but the total cost of the sewer.
The total cost of the project came in about the $10,000 mark plus the $4,000 the city kicked in.

We are very happy with the results.

Trex is the best on the market. We haul it everyday. In fact got a truckload (48000lbs) sitting outside the gate waiting to deliver in the morning.

What do you mean by the $4,000 the City kicked in? No permit for a small deck would ever reach 4K.
