So, I decided to replace my water pump on my 68 NYer. Tonight was doing the removal portion of the job. It had either 57,000 or 157,000 and the only maintenance history I have is that it was last on the road in 1979 or 80 prior to my buying it.

I've had a couple of small company leaks that I've had to track down. Since they were dealt with I figured the seals in the pump are probably shot too.

Is the corrosion around the seal a sign of failure? The slight green coloring.

When I pulled the pump I noticed it is a Mopar pump and I was surprised at the condition I'd the impeller considering what the coolant looked like that I drained from it when I first got it.

There is always one bolt that is a bugger and sure enough I fought one of the fan bolts for what felt like half the night.

Make sure you get the correct pump,.
There is a difference between cars with and without A/C.
Also there is a difference between the late model one and the 68 you have.

Can you tell me what the difference is between the A/C and non A/C pumps?

Next time, leave the fan attached to the water pump, remove the four water pump bolts and lift it all out together. Then its a lot easier to get to the fan bolts, once its all on the bench.

Some interesting reading on water pumps starts at post #191 in this thread on the Dodge Charger forum. Overheating issue resolved....interesting read !
I had read this previously, but had not remembered much of it. For my visual nature I put it in a chart to be able to process it better. This is not my information and I may have even copied it over wrong so you should read the post Big_John linked to.

The AC pumps have a thicker body for greater volume, and use a smaller pulley for higher angular velocity (more rpm) from the crankshaft belt as I recall. The impeller blade count differs also.
