That is your speedometer gear housing. Depending on your rear end gear ratio and tire size the gear inside that housing would get changed out to the one listed in the FSM. Every gear is labeled with the tooth count. Depending what tooth gear you have you would line up the range marking with the boss on the transmission case.

welp another long day in the dungeon.....time to change filter...wasn't sure what to expect..was easy thankfully...even learned a little about these trannys from Graham this am...honestly if it wasn't for Graham and Tobias my boat woulda been sunk long ago me thinks,,,thanx fellas

That's tranny done and ready to install...on to the block tomorrow
That's all folks....nighters

I have that same goofy bracket (picture # 8, post 427) on the back of the LH head on my GT. Was wondering what it was for myself.

This is probably a little late, but since you were in the transmission to change the filter. Did you manage to adjust the bands? the FSM outlines the procedure and it is fairly easy. Might as well try it since the transmission is still out of the car. it can be done in the car, but doing it on a transmission stand looks a whole lot easier than under the car on your back.

was reading a tad on it buthought it better l leave it alone..outa my ballpark on this one...doin some stuff that's new to me so never say never...may revisit the tranny before l connect it back to the block...would have to school myself on the procedure......have new respect for tranny mechs...
