The gas tax issue is going to hit many states, I suspect, as more roads need attention. From population/traffic increases and maintenance issues. In many states, the gas tax hasn't increased in many years. In others, it's been increased a few cents here and there, along the way, not really being noticed. And sometimes absorbed by the oil companies themselves (at the pump).

There are state gas taxes and federal gas taxes, which when combined, account for a good bit of change on each gallon of gas's selling price.

At the federal level, some states are "donors" (get back less than they send to the feds) as others balance it out as "recipients" (getting more from the feds than they send in). Would be nice if every state got back all that they sent to the feds, but it hasn't been that way for decades, from what I understand.

4 dollar for a gallon...………...:steering:

We get 2 liter for that money...…..

I heard something about that today. Thankfully I drive a F150 work truck, and never see the gas bill. Wife drives a hybrid, getting around 51mpg. My diesel gets around 11mpg city, 18 hwy. Only drive occasionally these days. Expedition is around 16city/21hwy.

My state may be a recipient. I understand only Texas has more state maintained roads. Our gas tax is highest in the southeast but not as high as other states, such as California.

I fueled up with premium Thursday. $2.99/gallon. The Fury was full at 14 gallons.

California also passed a Cap and Trade law that allows for more or less unlimited gas tax increases if certain enviornmental targets to reduce carbon emissions are not met. This is what the "Yellow Vest" protesters in France were rioting about. Fuel taxes kept going up and up and wages did not.

Here in Oregon, the Democrap controlled legislature was trying to pass a similar tax bill as out dimwit governor has promised to follow California's lead. A similar measure failed at the ballot box in Washington and would fail if they put it before the voters here. Fortunately the Republican minority fled the state so that a vote could not be taken on this bill. Dems got so much hate mail about the pending tax increases from voters that they chickened out and agreed to kill the bill and Republicans agreed to return so that other business could be finished. Otherwise would would have gotten cap and trade in Oregon.

Thanks for the rest of the story. Last I heard, they were threatening to send cops to hunt down those legislators that left.

Once they left the state, the state police could not go after them without an extradition order.

Pennsylvania is still the highest gas tax...In the US......58.7 cents per gallon.

Sport utilities and trucks are still the best selling vehicles in the state.

In Wisconsin, communities receive state and federal road aid funds, in part thru gas taxes. What the community decides how to spend those dollars is up to them. Unfortunately, most use the money to prop up their general fund budgets or spend it on most everything but road work. I was always in favor of segregated accounts specifically for road maintenance only from gas tax money collected. That would also include wheel taxes and licensing fees.

And vehicle registration renewals are going up bigtime too! Last I paid for a 94 Dodge Caravan in CA. was $135 back in 2015, to be raised to almost $200, if not more? I pay $60 where I am now! I'm so glad I left that place!

I'm not a fan of cap and trade. It only moves the polluters around, typically, as many will purchase credits from "good guys" and keep on polluting until they decide to do otherwise. What it does do is incentivize businesses to put the pollution reduction into their normal budgets and get it done incrementally rather than waiting to the last minute (as many will do), which will cause dialogue about regulations and such "killing them". Many municipalities and such are still following the Paris Climate Accord orientations in the longer term, regardless of what WDC does now.

Back in the '90s, I believe, in TX it was the Democrats that "left the building" secretly, under the cover of darkness one weekend, to prevent a quorum of legislators, to make their feelings known about some legislation the Republican majority was trying to force through. It went on for a few weeks. Much negative dialogue toward them for not showing up and doing their job, when it seems, they WERE doing their job by resisting something they didn't like. Many were in OK and NM. It was a coordinated effort to leave, one Friday afternoon, in a normal matter. When they didn't show up on Monday morning, peoples' eyebrows tended to be raised. MUCH gnashing of teeth by the ruling Republicans as it tended to expose what they were seeking to do. Everything worked out better in the end.

Sometimes, I wonder why it seems to cost so much for some governmental items. Millions of $$$ for a new 911 Call center for a moderately-size county, for example. But then we live in a time of $65K pickup trucks, too! BTAIM

ohio gets 10.5 cents on gas and 19 cents on diesel monday.
Crap I almost forgot I need to fill all the cars and gas cans today.

I debated last year on getting another diesel work van. It was a wash in the difference of the price of fuel and the mpg, not even counting the extra price of the diesel option and higher maintenance cost. Now I am really glad I didn't buy the diesel with the even higher tax.

I had no idea my Pennsylvania neighbors had such high state gas tax. You have a major toll road and the roads aren't that great.

California couldn't let you hold top spot any longer, but that doesn't surprise me

Pennsylvania roads are horrible and they have all those ridiculous tolls .

I was in upstate NY two weeks ago and you could clearly see the state line in the road . You didn't need a welcome or you are now leaving sign .

The idiots in California voted for this increase, that in itself is unbelievable. The problem is I doubt they read the bill, the State has the ability to use the funds for whatever they want, most of it will never be used for road work. Something they have been doing for years but now they can do it legally.
