Roof Rail Weatherstripping

I also have been calling Matt for the last 6 months. Sent him an example for production. It's real guys......

Matt at Roof Rail Weatherstripping has apparently created the roof rail weatherstripping for Formals. He sent me a sample. It's similar, but not exact. I took these photos. I could give it a try, but am reluctant to remove the 42-year old stuff for this sample.

I mentioned that it wasn't exactly the same, and got this reply from the vendor. At least we seem to be getting somewhere:

"I GOT A BETTER SAMPLE FROM ANOTHER CUSTOMER

I AM GOING TO TRY AND PUT A HOOK ON THE OUTSIDE LIP

TO GET A LITTLE BETTER SEAL TO THE WINDOW

THIS WILL BE ONLY AVAILABLE BY THE FOOT

I AM NOT MOLDING THIS AS EXACT PARTS

I DO NOT DO THE CHRYSLER SHOW AT CARLISLE

IT MAY BE SEVERAL MONTHS TILL AVAILABLE

JEFF"

Well!! It’s certainly Headway non the less.. I’m in for some “Footage” when they’re ready.. thx March for the steady pressure..

Sold by the running ft. only.
That means reusing the old molded corners and end pieces which in turn means butt splices you have to glue and pray for.
Yes, better than nothing.
It is a far cry from the initial claim that "someone says that he heard that 1974-1978 Chrysler C-body 4 door hardtop Roof Rail Weather stripping was..."
Like I said.... It ain't happening.
I'm saying this only to make the whole issue clear to everyone especially the new buyers of these vehicles.

Thanks to a great friend I won't have to worry about that for the next 20 years....

THANK YOU!!!!

What would it take for someone to make injection molded end pieces? I can see where there may be enough demand to justify a simpler DIY glue together solution using linear molding... at some point, folks will settle for what they can get.

My initial inquiry here in Savannah shows a die could be made and 200' feet made for $1G. Problem is (as noted by others) is the complexity- Formals have sharp window corners, complex molded ends, AND a different profile on the c-pillar portion. Cutting and splicing would be required. I have not as yet submitted a profile design, thus I am still waiting to see where this goes...

This would be part of my next inquiry as well. But do I understand correctly- @commando1 has already received $ info for the complete system? To do it absolutely correctly, 2 different extrusions would have be mated with 4 different molded ends (left/right/front/rear). And this is just for the ventless 4 dr hdtp version. 2 door coupes and hardtops would be different still!

I was given the total cost of tooling (extrusion moulding dies & injection moulding dies, and assembly dies) years ago by SoftSeal at $15k which I pay up front. Material and labor would depend on qty. of OEM style roof rail weather stripping assemblies, of course. Plus there was a minimum.
No way in hell.

Now this drives me nuts: Steele came out with one for sedans. Aren't there like a zillion more Hardtops out there than sedans?? EDIT: See below.

The plot thickens.....
Steele has no current listings for Formal seals. (I missed that) My interest remains. The Savannah supplier can supply extrusion and molded components, but not "complete all in one" replacements. Still following along.....

I sent Jeff of Restoration Specialties a sample of an old roof rail from a 77 Newport coupe that I purchased from Murray Park....months ago....and Jeff was kind enough to send me a back a 12 foot sample of new "75 roof rail." This follows months of my inquiries. I assume this sample is supposed to be a "close enough" fit that he recently had manufactured--he had said he was making progress on that front. My vehicle is a 77 Newport coupe. I will call him today.

Advice? I'm thrilled to see a possible replacement, but am loathe to take out the current roof rail unless I am sure the replacement will do the trick. And I'm not schooled enough to know from looking at the rubber whether it will work.

Thanks guys.
