Slum garage beside carport. Plenty of old faded wood to dig into. Carpenter bee dessert table.
6/16

Carpenter bee side of wood 2x4 holes. Also, dig perfectly round holes in bottom of wood about the size of 38 shell. Exterminator killed some of them, but not all

Sprayed Carb cleaner into them, using red straw. Internet Idea. Then wood putty after area dry. Good sale on Gumout at Advance. Have used about 3 16 oz cans. Most bees are dead. Key is to kill the large bumble bee looking females, because they dig the holes. Males just hover and can't even sting.
6/23 Have Used 2 16oz cans of DAP wood putty to present.

Exterminator tells me that carpenter bees don't dig into painted wood.
6/24 masking garage

main weapon: Kobalt Air Compressor Spray Gun. $59 at Lowes

6/29 Spray all the trusses and 25 year old wood sucking up primer. Kilz 2 will spray thru this gun. A long job ahead

Spray gun, not so pretty. Note: must follow breakdown and maintenance procedure after every day of use.

7/5 Up and down the ladder. Kilz 2: Spray, refill, spray some more. Canister holds 1 quart. 3 turns out on fluid control knob. Touch up with brush.

7/6 Getting closer. Rear & side. Watch out for new holes in unpainted areas or areas where the wood sucked up most of the paint. Lots of going over places 2 and 3 times. More carb cleaner, more dead bees, more wood putty

7/9 Front half done. Paint still white. Lousy phone camera

7/10 Exterior wood trim also under carpenter bee attack. Had to remove some of it along carport roof.

More carb cleaner and wood putty on newly exposed holes in 2x4 behind trim board.

7/13 Kilz 2 brush on

7/14 Wood Trim Board above rear of garage, still OK. No 38 holes in 2x4 behind

7/13 Garage: Had to turn to family members for help with cleaning and masking and paint. Paid my 2 kids to help clean the exterior of garage. I primered 2 coats Kilz 2. They brush painted 3 sides of garage, wood trim & 2 bay doors with Behr White Exterior paint.

Side primered. Scared away a bat that was living behind the vents. Cooling looking animal

7/17 Pull down masking under carport. Tape off window and door. 2 coats Kilz 2 followed with 3 coats Behr, 1.5" angled brush. Blue was not faded and hard to cover.

Hot but tranquil moment. Extreme Virginia heat made this one hell of a job.

Carport Window and Door, finished

I have a carpenter to put up walls around the carport. Really having trouble finding someone to do the concrete pad first. 3 different recs have not panned out. I can't even get someone to give an estimate. Got a guy from Craigslist I'm going to try next. Despite the heat, big construction season in Virginia. May not be able to get concrete pad until Fall.

Wow, what a heck of a job, well done!! Spraying the trusses and underside of that roof must have been a monumental job. How many trips up and down the ladder, my body hurts just thinking about it.

Note to self, build things down south, paint the wood first.

UGH, those damned things. They had our garage for a season the year before we moved in. We sided it and sealed it up but they still hover around and look at us. Creepy, wood chewing bastards.

Back of Garage unmasked. Last of plastic removed. Home Depot sells 1x5 trim board in 6 ft lengths. Next up: prime it and cut to size. Heavy rain expected tomorrow. Bummer.

7/24 Signs of the enemy. Plugged these last 3 holes. Killed 1 more female bee. Haven't seen any since

Holes are at front of 2x4 backing board exposed in this picture. It got a lot of wood putty, primer, and paint.

Rear side: no bee holes, trim boards salvageable

1x5s, trim boards from Home Depot, after Kilz 2 primer, 2 coats both sides

Next 2 coats both sides of Behr Paint, also Home Depot, Excellent Paint (Lowes Valspar & also Sherwin Williams are lousy in white)
Purdy 1.5" angled brush has lasted thru all this.

7/28 front Trim Board replaced

7/29 Front Trim after 2 more coats of Behr

Rear Trim, siding clean (trusses are still painted, phone cam f'ing up again)

7/27 Front Corner Work: had to paint garage corner trim and side of 6x6 that faces garage, 2 coats Kilz 2

7/30 Pale spots on garage roof, from using push broom to sweep off moss

Moss likes shade. Culprit, white oak to right side of garage

Ladder is on bed of truck. Only way I could get high enough.

Pruning complete. Ain't perfect, but at least some sun hitting all of garage roof for part of day.

Finally got someone to do concrete: Keith Stone of Stone Enterprises
Prep Today, Pour Tomorrow
· Marked poles, cinder blocks, set up 2x4s: 4” concrete level, using Laser on tripod and laser on long measuring stick

· 2x4s to surround area. Screws thru metal posts and into 2x4s

· Added crush run with Bobcat Loader to bring stone up to 4” below marks

· Honda Tamping machine to tamp down

Joe Ball, Keith's employee worked on my 3' ramps

Spent about 3 hrs 45 min here today. Should be here 7am to 2-3pm tomorrow to pour concrete and work it.
Concrete cost: $3325

I'm no painting expert, but I had the air compressor and hose. I thought the simplest thing for such a large area would be to buy the air compressor spray gun.

Concrete Pour

· 6:45am day start
· 7am-7:45am: Essex Concrete Mixer truck
· Pour concrete thru chute while 3 men spread

· Here until 4:20pm. Spent 1st bit of time wiping water off top
· After concrete set up for 3-4 hours, ran surfacer with propeller. Also, hand planed surfaces. At end, Removed 2x4s

Can walk on it now, but advise against parking on it for 5 days.
Carpenter coming for estimate on Saturday morning.

They did polyurethane under the concrete and then rebar long ways down the center. 4 or 5 rebars I'd guess. Didn't use any mesh.
