PS pump squealing like a pig when I get on the gas. Pulled the drive belt off while parked, no squealing. Pully moves up/down, side to side. Can the pully be spinning on the shaft or is my pump bad?

Here are a couple pics of my pump. What type is this, (Federal/Saginaw)? Please advise what I need to purchase. Back to my research now. Thanks!!

First things first, have you checked the belt? If there is oil or some other contaminant it could be your cause. Have you made extra sure that the belt is tight? Is it a metallic squeal or a rubbery squeal?

New belts, cleaned the pulley area where belt rides. Metallic squeal. Tried running belt loose, tight, sounds the same, maybe a little worse when belt is tighter. Same sound when original belts. Thought when I replaced all my belts during AC conversion, that belt would solve it. But no. The huge amount of play in pully shaft, makes me think pump bearings are bad. When pressure put on pump by the belt, makes that metal to metal squeal.

I would take the pump off and douse the front seal with oil and see if that improves it. More than likely it is time for a rebuild.

Probably going to have to. Embarrassing as hell! Just been so hot, rather drive than work on car, main reason I put drum to disc conversion on hold lol

Yep, "Federal" pump. Certainly NOT a Saginaw pump, due to the size and shape of the filler neck and related cap. Easily identifiable, either way. Might check the serviced manuals at www..mymopar.com for correct pump type nomenclature.

Not sure why no leaks with any pump shaft movement (as described). There should be a lip seal on the shaft. That much movement surely would have worn it out, so it should leak, I would think.

Please advise,

I have the same pump on my 66 Monaco. It uses a weird rubber bushed dual mount designed to automatically tighten the belt on acceleration and avoid slipping, it works but the pump and pulley move around a lot. If you have the same setup check that bushing, it may be worn to the point that it is not doing the job anymore...

I believe that his bracketry is for the later model which is "solid", from the looks of it being "square" with the front of the engine.

Our '66 Newport had the "torque sensitive" power steering mount. Key thing is to NOT tighten the belt like you would with a solid mount. It might look loose, but it will tighten up as the pump leans into the belt, under load. The one on our Newport never has been "fixed", so it sits crooked, but the belt doesn't slip (or fly off) and it still leans into the belt when a load is put onto the power steering pump. Seems like that "mis-understood" braketry was used from about '61-'67?

Back then, it was somewhat common to hear power steering belts make noise on bigger GM products, but not on a Chrysler product. Plus, with that flexible system, the power steering belts seemed to last much longer, too!

Enjoy!

I'm still alive!!! Had to put working on cars/truck/bikes for awhile. Had an infection in my left/outside ankle bone area, healing nicely. Doc ordered an MRI few weeks ago, and found something abnormal. I thought he was going to clear me for work.....but no! Had to cut my ankle open to inspect the bursa sack. Not sure what all he did in there. Have a nurse come daily to 'pack' the wound. Off still to Nov 1st! I feel fine, but doc said stay off ankle. Sucks!!

Anyways, I did get the pump out. Ordered a replacement from RA. Got pulley off old pump, need to reinstall pulley and pump back into car and flush etc. Researching how to flush old fluid out, and what to do. Don't think I want to be crawling around, jacking car up, to flush pump with a healing ankle.

Question...PS fluid....just use a non-synthetic? Worried if I don't get out all the old fluid, (non-synthetic), and I put new synthetic fluid in there...I may have issues?? Thanks!!
