I need help with decoding my cars special order fender/body tags, it is actually two tags. The first tag is "regular" the next just says "special paint" and "special order". What is the deal here, regarding the paint the car is in Y2 = sunfire yellow, what is special with that!? And what is the other "special order" men?

I do not see any special about this car besides it is a small-bloc car but with the big 26” radiator (probably because it was sold to hot CA as new), and I do not think that is particularly special either.

My somebody please bring som light over this? THANKS!

I wish I could answer your question. I'm sure others will have the answers you are looking for. I just thought it was kind of neat that our cars have the same build date at the same plant!

The 26” radiator is because of the A\C.

The Y39 and 926*** specialty VON tells us the car was designated or specified for a certain purpose. SPECIAL PAINT usually appears with a fleet or “cop car” where the paint job is a non standard “one color all over” paint job.

My guess is the car was painted in a specific paint scheme that may have included another paint not specified on the tag. The car could have been ordered for a specific event or company.

Thanks! Is there any way to find out more in some archive or anything?

Do you know how much I wish I could say yes? (No. You don’t......)

Sadly, no. There is no “archive” that could help.

It pays to read the whole tag, lol. I’ll go with special parade car then.....

There is no way to know for what purpose it was built. Parade, giveaway, courtesy car at some sporting event, corporate public relations......a large number of possibilities exist as to why the car was ordered the way it was.

(Revised message) We know the tag with the VIN came on the car. I doubt that “special” tag came on that car. Remove the tag and look under it, and Y2 yellow under either tag? Any Y2 under that black paint on top of the special tag?

Since the cars were factory painted with tag on then should be no Y2 under either the tag, right?

The tag matches the VIN in the windshield.

The car is Y2 right now, but have been restored during the years, and I can see it has been white one time at least.

Unfortunately, Chrysler have no build records after 1967, so that's that. There may be a build sheet jammed into the springs under the rear seat, under the front seat, or taped to the top of the glove box.

If I recall correctly, records were once moved to a new building but some disappeared for reasons unknown. If they still exist they are yet to reappear.

Happy New Year!

Thanks for the answers on this on this topic. I have dug a little deeper into this and the body of my car. And I think I figured out what the answer is. Maybe not what "special order" is referring to but at least "special paint".

It seems that Plymouth did not normally sell Fury models with sunfire yellow (Y2). According to this video, there were 17 colors to choose from on a Fury 1969 (5.57 into the video):

But the sunfire yellow was not one of this 17 colors, that color seams to be only available on b-body and a-body cars that year. If you didn’t make a “special paint” order, and that was probably the case here. The first owner must have specifically wanted this color and ordered the car that way and with the "special paint" body tag.

I think the question was referring to the special order tag to see if it may have been put there by somebody later and not by the factory.
