Things that say you're "Home"

When I start hearing these V-22's, and the AV8B's flying overhead, I know I'm close...

Shame they caved to the PC crowd... another one bites the dust.
Maybe they should dress it up like Elizabeth Warren:rofl:
Three blocks or so west of the cigar store on 63rd, was a bar called The Midget Club. The pc morons would have hated that, except it was owned and run by real midgets. A midget guy and his midget wife. The bar wasn’t the usual height, but about the height of your kitchen table. They claimed they were both munchkins in the Wizard of Oz. Had pics from the movie hanging around the place. That was at least 40 years ago and they were probably in their 60s then so it could have been true. Long gone, but at least I got to have a couple of drinks there.

Interesting thread. Missed it in '17 so read all 4 pagez. Several commentz from many of you guyz have Jared my memory bankz to several locationz scattered around our fair land but I guess I've been too much of a gypsy to zero in on any one location. Their IZ one little town in mid-state Wisconsin that I lived in during WWII that I'll never get back to and that I-94 replaced US12 when it bypassed the town in the mid '50. And the population haz increased a little over 100 more citizens since the 1950 census.(I've checked) My Dads Folks had a farm just a few miles out side the loop around Madison that we'd visit often and on the return trip up US12 after going thru' Baraboo and the "Dells" az we entered this little town the 1st thing that came into view waz the A&W Root Beer Stand. I'd sure like to stop there for ah Root Beer Float again before I leave this earth, Jer

I know I'm close when I see Hueys buzzing around. I take comfort in knowing theres someone on the .50 cal as they buzz my house as a marker on their flight path. Unfortunately they are being phased out, I have good memories in the field and at home.

This was a real treat. You don’t think about how important stuff like this is. For my whole life it was the lights on the south mountain towers. Radio stations & whatnot. You could see them like a lighthouse about 40 miles away.

Now that we’re in SoCal it’s the airplane safety lights from magic mtn. From the road you can only see the lights as the park is hidden. Definitely not as cool as the lights on South Mountain Park in Phoenix Az.

Rietburg Ropeway. Still the way it was built back in 1954.

I seemed to have missed this thread the first time around. I live at a lake, but not on the water. I have a boat but don't get out on the water nearly often enough. My wife has lived here her entire life.

This is a cove which we like to drop anchor and swim. Every time we do this we ask ourselves why don't we do this more often. This is home. :)

I forgot myself that I started this particular thread. I went on a nostalgia ride in another one:

Heavy Metal Post #390

The mid-America State Fair in Topeka Kansas. A staple of my youth long gone, but this is the time of year I remember the sights and sounds. And boy do I miss my Dad.

Enjoy it all while ya can .. you all know this, but I was reflecting on Zymurgy's wise and in my case poignant comments @ #73 above and how they resonate as I age. Yes, this is still "home" - even if only in memory :)

First three pics - The "Midway" in the 1960's (looking south to north, the Kansas State Capitol dome is visible in the distance in a couple shots, and the racetrack grandstand clearly visible at bottom of second pic).

Man ... I can smell the cotton candy, the taffy, the caramel corn, hear the calliope-like sounds from the rides, hear the screaming and laughing. heck I am 8 years old again, and its a warm summer night, and I can see my 33-yr old Dad (rest his soul) is over there with my 27-yr old Mom laughing and eating popcorn ... :)

When I can smell the salt in the air. I've been traveling since July 5th but should be home in Gulf Shores in a couple weeks...… Looking forward to the salt air again.
