Oil pan on my Fury has a big old dent in it. Do I need to replace it or who cares?

Mine was a bit worse...but it kept old oil from draining and sludged....it can also close off the oil pickup tube if too deep.

That is repairable. Take the pan off and use a block of wood and a big hammer to remove the divot. Be sure to clean thoroughly. (PS it is not that bad) You appear to have a top end oil leak, probably valve covers judging by the amount of sludge/dirt on the outside.

I would be worried about the pickup screen being blocked some with a dent that large, no need to replace tho, just repair.. Of course, you'll have to sacrifice some of that, erm, rust preventative you have going on there. HTH, Lefty71

Take a bathroom toilet plunger and stick it to the base then pull it back down.

Thanks for the input guys. This car is new to me, so I'm going through it as best as I can to make sure it's safe and driveable. The car definitely had valve cover leaks, but those should be fixed now so there should be less grime buildup going forward.

Hopefully all I need to do to get the oil pan off is remove the steering link bar and unbolt the pan. I'll be checking my service manual later.

You may have to disconnect the engine mounts and lift the engine a bit.

Yikes. That could be challenging.
its not really, only two bolts hold the mounts in place onto the sub frame. The drivers side is a 9/16ths bolt head accessed from in front of the starter motor, the passengers side is gotten from the front of the mount under the alternator.

I suspect this is a dumb question, but how do I lift the motor once it's unbolted?

Use a floor jack or something similar on the bottom of the harmonic balance. I haven't ever had issues doing it that way. As for popping the old pan out, the best way is to take it off and use a piece of wood and hammer to knock the dent out from the inside.

As long as it's not leaking, I'd leave it alone.

If you really feel like pulling it, yea, it could be straightened. You also want to see if the pickup is pushed up any. I don't think you'll need to jack up the engine though.

My guess would be if it is sucking oil and pressure is good then leave it but if you like to put your foot into the throttle then you may starve the engine if it can’t pick the oil up fast enough

Usually you starve them getting on the brakes hard. A 400 in a Fury isn't going to have enough g forces for the other, if you know what I mean.

It definitely doesn’t accelerate fast enough to starve anything. Not sure what the oil pressure is since there is no gauge.

On the bright side if I do drop the pan to repair it I can check for timing gear teeth. The motor has had some work done, bur not documented so I’m not sure if that has already been taken care of or not.

Gotta laff at that one, from the amount of grime on that engine & chassis I really don't think any work has been done on it since the dinosaurs roamed the earth.
Someone may have paid to have work done, but IMO they got taken.
