Hi again from Tampa,

The previous owner of my '67 Newport custom replaced the stock radio with a cassette player, and in the process, sawed up the dash plate it was mounted in. I probably could get a replacement plate and radio from AMS, but instead I took the old plate and modified it.

I ordered a "Newport Custom" script off ebay for around 10 bucks, and got two flooring samples for free at Home Depot. I covered a piece of 1/4" plywood with black vinyl, and mounted the script. Here's the result, and I'm perfectly happy with it, and I don't anticipate it will pose any danger to my family or to the public at large. I could be wrong. But, rest assured naysayers, the fix is totally reversible, I didn't overpay, and any off-gassing is probably negligible.

In California, that's not CARB approved! Your car would be confiscated and destroyed. I'm not so sure about the safety aspect of it, but looks good!

It certainly dominates the dashboard, and its got to better than the ugly hack job you covered. Good looking fix. Many years ago, I had a ‘71 Charger and the factory radio placement did not lend itself to aftermarket replacements. The previous owner did really careless job on the dash when he put in a am/fm cassette player. It looked like **** even with the trim plate on it.

Thanks for the kind words gentlemen. The Mighty Chrysler is almost ready for the cruising season down here in central Florida, which begins soon. I'm just waiting on the front seat to come back from the upholstery shop, and the car will be ready to go. Meanwhile I continue to work on the '63 Riviera, so I'll have my choice of Detroit boats to take out on the upcoming Saturdays. I'm looking forward to driving the cars around, instead of working on them!

That Riviera looks gorgeous.

You have a strange concept of what California is really like. Nothing like what you described would ever happen here. Then again, I may be missing a note of sarcasm. That I like! :-D

Trust me Duncan, I lived there for over 16 years and have seen it's demise firsthand. Sarcasm maybe, just saying how I feel about that borked up place!

What???? No tunes?????

I'm with Scott. I think it looks good, but I would want to have a sound system. That is actually what I am working on for my car now that the AC is operational again.

I finally got a car with a working radio, drove over 1500 miles, and listened to the radio for maybe a total of 200 miles. I love listening to the sounds of my old cars, it's music to my ears.

I was being facetious. My radio works, but only on FM and only through the back speaker. Then, the radio will not hold a signal so I have a need to tune often. Therefore, I never use it.

But if I were to drive over 1500 miles, I wouldn't be in my Newport; I'd be in my Durango. With Satellite radio and a thumbdrive with over 3000 songs on it, I always have something to listen to. And, I enjoy that.
