in post #844 it looks like the #48 Mercury has the Cyclone Spoiler II front end on it.
Were the ford/mercury cars restricted to 5 liter engines if they ran the aero bodywork in 1971?
I'd never heard of any of the fords doing this, just the Rossi/Brooks Daytona.

Yes they where

I think Mario lobbied (argued) NASCAR hard to allow the cars to compete due to his investment in his. He & Bill France did not get along.

Absolutely loved looking through these pictures and reading the inside info on the golden age of stock car racing. Thank you all for the education!

DC-93, before it was painted Corporate Blue and numbered 88. This pic taken at Chelsea P.G. July 13th., 1969.
Note the wing is body color. (B5 Blue)
A week later the car ran 205 with Charlie at the wheel.
That was overshadowed by some guy landing on the moon.

Bobby Allison ran 197.5 testing DC-93. Set an unofficial record at that time.
He was the fastest during that session. Other drivers were Baker, Isaac, Glotzbach, Goldsmith.

Here's the Chrysler document that explains the "Fake 88" Blue painted Daytona at the Talladega Museum. They have known it was phony since 1997.
There is still blue paint coming off to reveal the original red underneath.

The Ramo Stott Super Bird has the same construction. I have seen it in person.
I saw the same car up close in September, 2014 at the annual car show that's held at the old abandoned race track, Meadowdale International Raceway, which is now part of the forest preserve, called Raceway Woods in Dundee Township. The track was closed back in the 60's because it was considered too unsafe in the high banks, where some drivers flew over, when their approach was too fast.
I've seen the car there a couple times. I don't know if the Ramo's Superbird was there this year though.
