New Member - 71 Newport "barn find" clean car

Quite frankly after sitting all those years I was surprised you were able to get it going under its own power (not just up and down the trailer). Did you get any offers on the way home?lol. When I bought my Dodge Challenger RT I had three separate guys offer cash for on the way back to my house. Unbelievable.

That was quite the saga! What a trip. Great dog too! Hope you can make that car into a fun ride. I like it and imagine it will look great once it's all cleaned up.

I knew id be able to get it running fairly quick but i was really surprised with how well it ran, minus that horrible 2bbl carb. No smoke, no oil burning... not even a dry lifter sound, fascinating!

People were trying to buy it because its a Challenger! lol , i have to say i had more people asking about this than when i had my fully Restored Trans Am on a trailer. People were really curious of what it was or possibly remembered one. The best was when i was crossing into California at the border AZ inspection, this dude explodes out of one of the booths across 3 lanes and is all "HOLYCRAP. is that a 71?!" Turns out this guy loved his Fusies lol.

Thanks! Will post up the video i took of it all cleaned up later this week!

Be sure to get all the old gas out of the tank, or the varnish will quickly make your valves seize up. I learned this the hard way.with an old Pinto that had not run in 15 years.

What a find! Even has the OEM radio and only 23,000 miles. I parted out a car just like this.

You know what that car needs? To go on the Power Tour. 296 days left 'til the next one..
Fantastic idea, the car really wouldn't take much work to get to that stage. a decent intake and a 4 bbl, 2 rear wheel cylinders and a set of tires and a cleaned out fuel system. I bet it would make the whole trip.

Yeah nothing nicer than an old car with an unmolested radio!

In other news i finally got a short walk around video of the car after she's all cleaned up.

So any advice on the rear window rust. Looks like for now i could cut the vinyl top at the seam lines where it runs the length of the lower window and cut that rust out of there. I feel this is the time for any rust that was sleeping to finally start really making headway, Since its much more damp out here than Texas.

Any thoughts? If i'm seeing that much rust come through the top, how much should i expect to be under there... it feels very solid outside of those 3 bubble spots.

Enjoy!

oh also, whats the deal with that Decal about the carb, is it some kind of dealer install? Seems strange it has that little note with part number, phone number and car model/make taped ontop of what looks like some kind of data card.

Completely new to this Chrysler stuff, so apologies for the bonehead questions.

Thanks!

Red car, white top, blood on the interior... Kinda of a christine vibe with this one! I like it! What a buy!

As a start, I would remove the stainless moldings around the rear window and see if the vinyl can be peeled back enough to observe what is going on in those trouble spots. That might be all that you need to do to get at and repair it. I would also take the opportunity to apply some sort of coating/rust paint/sealant around the entire opening to prevent any future rust advance.

As for the carb, since you are dubious of it, perhaps just have it rebuilt locally or buy a rebuild from a place like this:

http://www.guaranteedcarburetors.co...th-CARS-8-Cylinder-2-Barrel-Carburetor/1.html

Not really a whole lot of money and a lot less work than a 4-bbl conversion. Of course, before any of that I would drain/clean the gas tank and lines.

The green sticker underneath should be there from the factory already. It has some Basic data for engine adjustment. The other one is pretty odd, but could be some info because of replacement. Did you call the number yet. ;)

Nice car.

I agree with your idea to dump the carb. But think small four barrel unless you also dump the heads, exhaust manifold, cam and exhaust system. Edelbrock makes a decent economy four barrel that should work

But given its survivor status, I would invest the 50 bucks for a rebuild kit first (half the purchase price!). It should run well enough.

These 360 are all about smooth low end torque not high end horsepower and gasp a bit above 3500 rpm.

I really like the originality of the car and it's "sporty" look.

As as for the top, SMS has the material for the top you can buy to replace the center section that is discolored and is showing some rust damage. You are lucky to have noticed it before it rusts through. These cars often leak right where you noticed it and the next issue is a rusted out trunk.... But hurry! You haven't got much time from the looks of it.

Here is their website. http://www.smsautofabrics.com

good luck with the project and keep us posted

Do you still have the Newport? I have been following your T-37 build on YouTube it's looking good. Can't wait to see it finished and see what is in store for your Charger.

That's living the dream! Would like to hear more on the current state as well.

Whats up guys!

Well finally wrapped up my other project and 2 weekends ago i found myself at home on a saturday morning with nothing to work on. SHOCK! - Unwrapped the old newport and dragged it out of the lean to.

I'm going through a bunch of stuff and getting it ready for driver status. ordering up some parts and im stuck - with one thing. Can anybody recommend me a master cylinder part number? i keep landiung on B body master cylinders and dont want to order if they wont fit. The car has a booster on it. Could someone please provide me a master cylinder part number form Dorman or someone?

Things done this week.

Purchased a mopar electronic ignition conversion kit.
drained gas tank and removed blocked sending unit.

I can't offer you a number but you should be able to get one with no problem. I always use Rock Auto at least as a reference, They ended up having the best price for my 300. They will spell everything out for you, whether you have power brakes, drum or disc brakes in the front.

@swilling: I got a Raybestos MC last month for Medina, my '71 Monaco. I bought it from Rock Auto.

I wrote a post, with pictures and links, re: @71Polara383's work on Medina’s brakes, in the thread on my car; it is here.

The Raybestos catalog is online and has a search function that should help you out.

Just went and read through this whole thread because its the 1st time I've seen it, very nice! Then I started watching your video and it didn't take long to realize I've watched you haul a gold Charger across country too! Two great road trips with a hot woman by your side, couldn't ask for much more! Thanks for sharing
