The 70 model year Gran Coupe which is subject to this thread has a b-pillar, while the 71 did not btw, they switched from the 2dr-Fury I sedan base to the Fury III Hardtop coupe base in 1971.

Yes, Mine is a 71 and it definitely does not have a B pillar. A 2dr Hardtop "Coupe".....

A 2 door with a B-pillar that meets the roof is a coupe, a 2 door without the post to the roof is a hardtop. I could be wrong but this is how I think about it.

Marketing gimmick to sell the fancy name. Police cruisers were historically sedans mainly because they were usually cheaper and it is more difficult for the rear seat occupant to kick out the rear door window on a sedan.
