Hello.
I am new to the forum and this is my first post.
I am about to replace the roofliner in my 68 New yorker and noticed some surface rust on the inside of the roof.
Do you have any tips om how to remove it with out making a mess in the car by grinding or sanding?

There’s plenty of rust converter products out there including a line of products from POR15. Knock the loose rust off and brush a coat of that stuff on.

If it is just light surface rust you can use a gel product like Naval Jelly or Evapo Rust gel. I'm assuming that you still have the interior in your car, so make sure that you cover everything.

Use a stainless wire wheel on a 4.5 inch angle grinder. Then clean it with solvent . Finally paint it with primer. This will solve the problem permanently. Coatings and gels are for the gullible .

Its light surface rust, but i will have to remove the roofliner completly to check the rest of the roof.
Thank you for the input, i Will post some pictures when i have checken the roof

These are the only pictures i have of the car at the moment.
But i do have a picture of the buildsheet.
Maybe one of you guys with more knowledge can tell me more about the cars options if there is anything unusual or so?

Where is the button located that operates the Power trunklid release?

If it's just light surface rust, I'm inclined to simply leave it be. The rust made a film over the bare steel from the factory and stabilized so that it has in essence been like that for fifty years. I seriously doubt it will become an issue for the foreseeable future.

That is a beautiful New Yorker. I love the 4 door hardtop body style. That car was purchased new about 40 miles away from me in Vandergrift PA. Too cool.

Beautiful car! If my memory serves me correctly, the trunk release button is in the glove box?
I also noticed the window sticker shows the option for ‘ Head Restraints-Right Front. Only one? I don’t see another one in either of the other two pictures.
Now that I’m thinking about it, my dad had a ‘65 Ford Station wagon that was his work vehicle- that only had a head rest on the passenger side, I believe.
BUT, like I said, a beautiful New Yorker!!!

@75LandYacht The story of the car as far as i know, it was purchased from the original owner by a dealer here in Sweden that imported here.
It has about 55.000miles on it, never been restored.
Has all of the original parts on it as far as i can see except for the carburator.
I bought the car a couple of weeks ago so i have only driven it about 200miles.
The rain and the fact that they use salt on the roads during the winter made me decide to put it in the garage for the winter.

@Wollfen you are probably right, i will remove the rest of the roofliner and check the rest of the roof.

@mrfury68 i love the body style of the car

@Love Shack I found that button a while back and guessing that it was for the trunkrelease but it dosent seem to work.
The head restraint is only on the right side.
Maybe somebody has more information how come they did this back then?

I have had great results with a single edge razor blade used like a scraper.

If the trunk release is operated the same way as with the later Fuselage cars it should be vacuum operated. These items don't hold up the vacuum for too Long after the engine is turned off if still in use with the old parts, I have no idea if they were much better when new.

@live4theking
thanks for the info, always fun to learn more about these cars

@cm23uoc
It is vacuum operated, then i will have to check the hoses and parts associated with this to ser of if i can get it to work
