WOW!!!! Ala Don Garlits.....
Hope he walked away, as Steve Evan's would say....
Seriously, dang lucky!!!

At least it came apart with the clutch disc more or less in one piece. Pressure plate probably let go and took the front shaft of the transmission with it. Bad news in any case as there are probably holes in the back of the engine block and damage to the crank flange. Driver is very lucky it let loose on the passenger side of the car and I hope he had a change of linen with him..

Is that Quick Time bellhousing made to contain that explosion?

Looks like the red pressure plate and aluminum flywheel are still inside there, photo #6.

Glad for the driver that the floorpan is clean of body fluids.

If it was, it didn't work. I think Tony's going to buy a scattersheild to go along with his rebuilt transmission this time 'round. Hope he is doing well. I see in the first photo he has the fresh air cowl closed, I can't help but wonder if the plate would have caught some air had it been open?

The Quicktime shield is what most tracks require these days and they are supposed to contain a failure of an 18lb flywheel spinning at 10k rpms. Clearly this unit failed well below that level of exposure.. I do not see any chunks of the block hanging from any bolt in the shield and I agree that the fly wheel looks intact. Looks like some of the shield bolts were pulled thru and some probably broke off. They are all gone from what I can see in the photo. The red clutch cover appears split, perhaps from the clutch disc exiting or maybe from a chunk of the pressure plate letting go. The center of the clutch disc appears intact. Something of a mystery as to what happened here. A front shaft breaking usually does not send parts flying at this level. I wonder of somebody left part of the shield mounting bolts out or used lower grade bolts.

I'm not familiar with that type of drag specific transmission but, it looks like the shaft either disintegrated? Or was able to drop down or pull back? How else could that plate get out in one piece? If you look close at the last photo, it looks like there is a significant dent on the inside edge of the hole in the plate.

Had to look it up, Tony didn't get a scratch! And apparently that is a scattersheild, shows what I know. I was thinking of the blanket style. Trans mount broke! And the plate did catch some air! Went over the roof! I'm guessing they just put it through the dash for some interesting photos.
