Testing the waters of going 318 to 383 in my '67 Fury III.

Trying to plan things I wouldn't think about. What are some things I would need to change or headaches that would arise?

I would need:
Big block 727
Different transmission mount
New motor mounts
Trans kickdown linkage
Throttle linkage/cable
Tranmission cooler lines

The radiator, I need to look at the bottom outlets.

Is the driveshaft the same from the 318 727 to the 383 727?

Can the same torsion bars be used?

I need to look at my FSM when I get home but I can't remember if the 383's used 5 leafs or 6. That would stink if they used 6 because I just ordered new set of 5's thinking I would use my current 318.

I am using Kahn's thread titled 318->383 swap as well.

Thanks for the help.

Cooler lines, trans mount and driveshaft are the same.
Throttle cable should work also.
BB has a larger lower rad hose @1.75” instead of 1.5”
You will need all mounts and brackets and such for a BB.
What shifter do you have? Linkage will probably all still work if column, it did on a 67 B-body for me.
Console shift is the same.
The same T bars and leaf springs can be used, but they may be a lighter rate from the SB car. You can raise the front to hold the weight, but cornering May suffer some. See how it drives for you then upgrade if needed.

Found this from the "Engine eonversion help!" thread.
"So.... To go from a 318 with a 727 to let's say a 440 (go big or go home), you'll need another transmission to start with. The old exhaust won't bolt up to the manifolds, so you have to change the head pipes. The radiator may have the lower outlet on the wrong side and you may have to come up with the proper combo of water pump and radiator to make it work. Wiring is pretty easy, just extending the coil primary wire should do it."

If I was you, I'd warm up that 318 Poly. You can get a bigger cam for it, and you can even put multiple carbs on it (it'll really wail with a pair of AFB four barrels). If you do a complete engine rebuild, you can do even more with higher compression pistons, a larger bore, etc. Poly engines can make a lotta power, therefore, you could avoid a lot of hassle doing a 383 swap and the car would still have its original engine.

Is mine a poly or LA? How can you tell the difference? Needing to magnaflux it and machine it and buy new pistons and everything was really starting to sound expensive and like a lot of work! Could you point me in the right direction to read the difference about a 318 poly and 318 la?

If yer valve covers look like this, its a Poly:

The 318 is a nice little engine perfect for highway cruising and fuel economy. What are you after here? The 318 will easily do over 110mph. A 383 will give you a little more off the line for sure, but upgrading the 318 for more power by going with a torque cam and inlet manifold will have the same effect.
Plus you save yourself the hassle of all that changeover headaches.

1967 Plymouth Fury III 318

I need a new engine. Rather than spending thousands in a machine shop I have been looking for something I could drop in, or another 318 that has been running that I could to a simple overhaul (gaskets, seals, cam, intake), rather than have to have something magnafluxed, bored, honed, pistons, etc. etc.

I've come across more 383's in what seem to be running condition than any of the small blocks

As the current owner of and past owner of many other small block c bodies all I can tell you is the only advantage in stuffing a big block under that hood is bragging rights. Pop the hood and show off those big cubes!!! That’s it.

Stuff in a 340 or 360 and keep almost 100% of what you already got except for your MPG. Kiss that goodbye w a 340. I’ve 340’d a few c body convertibles over the past 30 years and they are every bit as fast as a 383 or 440 car. Your results may vary & don’t get me wrong I love Big Block c bodies but it’s not worth the hassle unless you’re already missing everything. Good luck w your project, just my two cents.

I am not a fan of the 318, so I would go with the 383 or 440 swap. If you want an easier time, you can do a nice 360 build and drop it right in.

I had a 340 in a Duster when I was in high school. Holy crap that little engine was fast!!! Much much faster than the 383 I had in a 68 Charger. I wish I still had that 340

There are stroker kits to bump a 318 to 390.
