Has anybody ever sent out their calipers for a rebuild instead of simply buying rebuilts from a parts store?

The reason I ask is because the calipers on my 67 Park Lane are four piston Kelsey Hayes and those do not grow on trees for swapping as cores for a re-manufactured set.

I'd have no hesitation - local rebuilders here have a good rep. However, I always specify to them to rebuild my cores, AND before I hand them over (and without telling them of course), I put a couple of hidden marks with a punch to identify them.

When I sent my steering box to Cardone to be rebuilt (I know but I’ve actually almost always had good luck with them), they actually sent back photographic proof that they had rebuilt my unit.

I don't think there will be anyone local to me at all. Did hear about Goldline up in WA. Then saw a 2014 report by a Porsche owner showing the poor job they did on his calipers with glass bead material still inside the caliper and his scored walls. They refused to make things right so naturally they are now on my suspicion list.

These technically are not hard to do as far as the piston is concerned. The big deal is getting the recessed location for the oil seal perfectly clean as it is not a rectangular slot.

Calipers are not a big deal to rebuild. Sandblast before disassembly then pop out the pistons with air pressure, (be careful with that), replace the seals and dust boots and reinstall. You can get all the hardware new from Rockauto.

Ya. Found that out for sure...

Maybe so but after gathering info from fellow Ford members with these calipers they all relate their problems with leaks afterwards. It all boils down to getting the location, that is hard to see, perfectly clean of everything or your O-ring will leak.

Look at Rock Auto, and just turn your's in as cores.
Those big, Kelsey Hayes, 4 piston calipers, for the Fords, and Mercury's, aren't hard to come by like the Mopar, Chrysler, "C" body BUDD disc brakes.

This is a year and a half old posting.
I'm sure the op got it done a long time ago.

Be careful about surrendering your known correct calipers, as the issue with people getting B body calipers misboxed as C body calipers in exchange which don't fit is becoming more and more common.

I would always have my originals rebuilt.

Those "Pin Type" calipers that TNT wagon is askin about, is a very common caliper to replace, and nothing to worry about in mix boxing, C body, BUDD disc brake calipers, for BENDIX, B body, disc brake calipers.

And the original posting, a year and a half ago, was concerning Kelsey Hayes, 4 piston calipers on the big Mercury, and Ford, cars that i never have seen getting mix boxed on the smaller Mustang and Cougar cars.

Much cheaper, quicker, in the long run, just getting rebuilt calipers, right out of the box, these days.

Too bad the hydraulic hoses for those Ford 4 piston calipers are unobtainium as they were discontinued 30 years ago at least. Went to NAPA and they were pulling out their old parts books looking for them and last saw a listing in 1985. Apparently not many people got the disc brakes back in 1967 in my car as tons of hoses for front drums are available.
