How do I take the light bulb socket out of these back-up light housings without destroying the socket? I’d like to use the socket again after rechroming the housing. It’s a rookie question but I’ve never disassembled one of these and I don’t want to damage it finding out how.

Mine just pulled out on my 68.

The ends kind of remind me of a knockout seal.

A good penetrating oil would be a start.... to allowing a little wiggle. Sometimes thats all it takes.

Yep, grab them near the base and wiggle while you pull.

My sockets were toast, you can find new replacements and use the rubber boot and it still looks factory.

Ok, pull it out from the back side? Looks like it’s ‘flanged’ at the front. No wiggle.

The tail lights on my ‘70 are like that. They are crimped in and not removable. There was a thread a while back where someone cut the socket off with a die cutter and used modern replacements that were removable from the back.

Taken out of context that funny right there:rofl::rofl::rofl:
Glad someone got it.
It would have been even better if the directions were accurate. I guess I haven’t been confronted with wanting to remove one of those pigtails that didn’t come out as I instructed.:(

It looks like you remove the lens and take the bulb out from the front. The parking lights on my Fury are that way.

Thanks guys. It’s a single wire. Still looking for replacement sockets as it appears they have to either cut out or carefully uncrimped from the housing.

My 6
‘68 Polara was like that.
I plugged/ masked around the socket and wire. And wiped down the rust and socket with Eastwood fast etch to get rid of the rust. I then used Eastwood TankTone which is a galvanized silver color and used MRO. Chrome Galvanize coating for the reflector portion inside.
I will try to find a link to that section of my restore thread

68 Polara restore back on
Actually as I look back at my post. I used the Cadmium zinc plating paints from Eastwood and not the tank tone. They have the gold, red and green colors, I may have used a little silver cadmium paint in the mix to get the right silver tone.
