I've got a 66 Monaco and the interior makeover is coming up soon. I want everything original in there.

My cars got a red interior everywhere except the steering wheel and seats, they're black. I dont think I've seen a combo like that before on the site, just full reds.

So my question is: Is this an original option, or has some one messed with it and it was originally full red?

I love a full red interior, but will keep it as is if that's how it came.

Would need to see some photos of what you have now. Most cars that had a red interior were usually black or white on the exterior. That usually meant a red interior with black or white trim, but you could also get an all red interior or an all black interior. Typically if the car had black carpets and a black dash with red door panels, there would be a black carpet accent on the bottom of the door cards. If the carpets were red, the accent would also be red. This is a guide only as there were lots of ways to mix and match interiors. I suggest you go on line and view som photo's of '66 Monaco cars for sale, see if your interior patterns are similar. If the interior was redone, there are usually subtle differences, such as wider pleating, a lot of upholstery guys will make wider pleats on a repair job to save time. Also look for any missing chrome accent badges on the seats, another sure sign of a redone interior.

I do have any good pictures of the full interior before I tore out the carpet and seats, but I can do some more describing. The seats still have the chrome trim, the door card is red with a black carpet accent at the bottom, the carpet was red, and the dash is red. I'll look at some pics online. Here's a shot of the dash, it's all I have right now.

Very likely it could have black seats. If it was an all red interior, it probably would have had a red steering wheel and steering column. Would have expected black carpets, but those could have been easily replaced.

Well what if I told you it's a black wheel, but red column?

Do you have a build sheet for this car? There will sometimes be a note on the sheet if the car was ordered with a non-standard interior package, but in '66 the build sheets are not usually all that detailed.

Dave

I might still have the previous owners contact info, I'll.pass it along to you if I still do.

Unfortunately I do not, thank you for the help though, I'll have to keep looking into it

I still talk to him from time to time. When he sold it to me he made it seem like he just had the car to sell it after his buddy didnt need it anymore

Might ask if there was a parts car involved could explain the odd steering wheel combo, could have also swapped seats.

O know 66's are a little different, but would a picture of the fender tag help?
Under the TRM letters (trim code) on the tag is a 3 digit code. The first two digits are the car type, the last digit is the interior color:
D=Blue
R=Red
T=Tan
W=White
X=Black
Y=Gold

There are probably some other colors, these are the ones I know about. If the 3rd digit corresponds to the seat color, the seats are likely original assuming the pattern and style for the vehicle are correct.

Dave

As we can see here it's an R, not corresponding with the seats, but I'm not certain if that determines it

The car was slapped together using spare parts, I remember talking to the PO about it. Wrong year engine, and mismatched interior parts. They were going to get a car going and decided to sell. Slowly coming back in my memory. :lol:

Yeah his back story seemed a little phony to me. Said his buddy was drag racing with a 383 stroker, 300 shot of nitrous, and melted the engine. Then his buddy gave it to him so he could just sell it. I doubt that with the stock trans and open 2.76 the Monacos got. Good to know about the interior parts though, I'll have to get those squared away! Looking like a Polara wheel. Funny thing is, the block he slapped in actually is a 1966.

Just my 2 cents....with a red steering column, red dash, red kick panels and door panels, my guess would be it originally had red seats. Not saying black is out of the question but rather suspicious. Or I could be completely wrong!!

It would have been red, I had a red Monaco parts car years ago, everything was red.

Funny, he told me it was a '69 vintage.
