I have 2 Old Polara VINS that I can't decipher the engine for

DS41G1DXXXXXX, and DS41G1DXXXXXX
From what found
D Polara
S Special
4 Door
1 Sedan
G Plant – St Louis
1 year 1971
D engine?

But I can't figure out what the D means for engine

Anyone?

Is the distributor on the front or on the rear of the engine?

5th number should be engine. G = 318 for 1971
7th number is assembly plant. D= Belvidere

you have the plant and engine decodes reversed.
It goes engine-year-plant.

so for 71....

G=318-2
1= model year 1971
D= assembled at Belvedere plant.

G code in the fifth digit is not a plant code, that is the engine code 318cid. 7th digit is the plant code. 1-7 as follows:

D= car line, Dodge
S= Sedan
4= 4dr
1=Price class
G= Engine code
1= year of manufacturer
D=Plant code, Belvedere IL

DS41G1D Dodge Polara 4DR Sedan, 318, 1971, Belvedere IL plant.

THANK YOU. I don't have the cars, they are old VINS I have found that belonged to my Police Service cars. I would love to find one to "restore" though

318 police cruisers were usually city cars, some would have the PK, DK or CK (318 not available in chrysler police units for '71) police designation for the first two digits of the VIN, that usually indicated a purpose built cruiser. It was also possible to just assemble whatever police options were desired on a standard sedan. Those units would bear DS, PS or CS and the first two digits. These build tag and build sheet would indicate which police options were installed. Most police cruisers will also have a K as the first digit of the order code.

These are the VINS. I have copies of our Police services old insurance documents. It doesn't surprise me that the service back then may have just bought base model cars.

This is in Canada if that makes any difference as to what we would have bought back then too

It was usually cheaper to buy the base models, so if a department was tight on funds, that was a way to save a little money. I do not think that was a Canada thing as police departments did that in the US as well.
