Preparing for the new top has been a slow burn. Had hoped it would have been done by now.

parts ready to go:

correct cologne grain vinyl for top 5 yards.

New rear window plug and glass from a 75 imperial. Rear glass has defrost and I got the switch. Will probably have to upgrade the alternator if I ever want to use it.

Interior trim from same car clean and ready for paint to match the red interior.

Need:

new weather strip for side windows.

Paint rear window trim to match new roof
material.

As part of the prep I spent Saturday and Sunday cleaning the sunroof. I always like to get everything working right before I pull it apart. Better now than later after all the new materials are in place.

Here’s the top finally working properly:

not on the list but while I was at it: repaired the missing button on the pleated leather rear seat:

missing button that was driving me nuts is finally in. Ended up making it out of some red vinyl I found that the previous owner left for the next owner.

Took a little time to give the interior a deep cleaning with some saddle soap followed by some Lexol.

And, of course a good bath.

almost ready.....

looking good, but fwiw Elk grain is the correct Salon grain vinyl btw.
which of course doesnt match the texture on the rear window trim so you are smart to use cologne grain.
its something that always bugged me on my salons......
do you need a source for a new sunroof weather strip ?

“do you need a source for a new sunroof weather strip?”

I could use that info please sir! I’ll eventually dig into my 77 NYB Sunroof as well, like to have new stuff on hand when ready. Thx

She looks fantastic Javier.. how bout some pics of the new STUFF you about to apply? Curious minds wanna see, as well as source info on where your Top material came from please. Thx

Outstanding job, Jav. Your OCD is to be admired.
You are the first person in history to clone a Salon. And most likely the last.

The top material came from SMS. The seal for the sunroof is still in place but will be refurbished soon. I plan to be there and help the trim people remove the panel and will take the seal with me to do the refurbishment. Actually heading that way now to schedule it.

We are booked for Thursday next week!

Here’s a picture of the plug and trim. I also got a black dash pad that looks to be great... any takers before I put it on EBay??

I got a sunroof seal for my 79 300 from Jake Kelleys sunroof parts in Tampa. He is a great old guy who collects nos sunroof parts. I have his number somewhere if you need it

Well.... it’s Friday. Yesterday I took the New Yorker to get its Salon roof as scheduled.

Arrived after lunch. Can’t wait to see it finished but first want to check condition of steel under the top.

I had already removed the sunroof panel and put it in the trunk prior to going over. The guys at All in Leather are great but I like to do the little stuff and make it easier for them when I can.

Another view of roof opening. The seal was actually glued on and it took some doing to get it out whole. It is my intent to rehab it and reinstall it.

New top material looks great.

I also have 5 yards of the correct silver pebble grain for a non Salon 78 if anyone needs it before it goes on EBay as well.

Back at the ranch.... started working on the rehab of the seals. Starting with a good cleaning of the components. I was able to save what I wanted, namely, the aluminum backing and weather seal strips strips that go under the flocking.

The strips themselves are actually silicone tubing.

There is a narrow gauge (3/16”) for the rear of the panel and a thicker gauge (1/8”) for the seal that is mounted to the roof along the front and sides of the opening.

Everything cleaned up and almost ready to start reassembly with the new flocking.... maybe tonight???

This afternoon was great news! Only two small spots of rust and no blow through spots. Looks real clean. Heading over for inspection Monday with the seals.

I also made some templates for some custom floor mats. Material ordered and should be here Monday as well. Can’t wait.

I just need to apply myself 1/10th of 1% of your effort, and I'd have a fleet of running, driving, and mostly clean cars in no time!

And I'm sure your car will turn out better than factory new would have been!

Useless information but informative nonetheless...
Is the C-piller seam plastic filler or lead?

Here’s a picture of the original top material I bought. Any takers? 5 yard and original material from SMS. Will take $125 (half of hat I have in it) plus freight.
