Folks, especially @kmccabe56, @Bill Watson, @Fratzog, @polara71, @vidsal, @fc7_plumcrazy, @bigmoparjeff:

I got the following "Final Notification" from Yahoo.com re: "The Evolution of Yahoo Groups." I am seriously worried that this great repository of thoroughly researched information and history could soon disappear. Am I misunderstanding?

"The following changes were made (...):
  • Users can now only join a Yahoo Group through an invite or group request approval by the Group Moderator.
  • New Groups can’t be public. They can only be private (not listed in Groups directory, membership by invitation only) or restricted (listed in Groups directory, membership requests must be approved by a Group Moderator).
  • Members must share all content via email, and can no longer upload or host new content on the Yahoo Groups website itself.

The following changes will be made on December 14, 2019:

  • Public groups will no longer exist. All existing public Groups will become restricted Groups that require Group Moderator approval to join.
  • Any content that was previously uploaded via the website will be removed.

If you would like to keep any of the content you’ve posted or stored within your Yahoo Group, please download it by December 14 (...) You will receive a link to a downloadable zip file via email for each of your Groups organized into a separate folder. (...) We are unable to accommodate any download requests made after this deadline."

Too bad but it really is a dead board anyway.... or on life support at best. Horrible format/layout and the lack of exposure hurt groups like this.
Not sure what they're saying but it seems to me why have a Yahoo group at all? Which is probably the intent. Facebook probably does it better ..... save what you can and turn the lights off when you're done .

This has come up over on the OIC and I believe it was determined that the archived info wouldn’t be lost.
There’s an in-depth thread(if that’s what you call it) on it over there with all the pertinent info.

I've requested the zip file from them.

Fred, thank you! I have done the same, but my worry is still that only the (very few) threads in which I participated will be saved in that .zip file. With this in mind, if other fuselage Dodge pioneers like yourself, Dave, Kevin, Bill, @My70monaco and the other main contributors to the Yahoo group who are now on FCBO do the same thing and request the file before the deadline of Dec. 14, then hopefully the Yahoo board info will not be lost.

While I agree with @polara71 that the Yahoo board is less than user-friendly, the amount of technical information and detailed owner-provided history about individual cars (especially the '70 'verts that I so love) is huge. Before 2012 or so, the Yahoo board and the two Dry Docks have been the place where to find info about fuselage Polaras and Monacos. IMHO, the Yahoo board is by far the most useful if one is willing to search, hence my attempt to collectively save the info.

Back when Yahoo! Groups was new and vibrant, it was a good place to be. As it seemed that EVERY web portal had a set of groups, even very similar groups, back then. It was very diverse and had some good groups on it, but you couldn't look at all the groups everywhere, so choices had to be made of where to "go" or "be". It was better than some of the older Usenet bulletin boards, though, unless the bulletin board was used more for (what came to be) PMs or in place of emails, by observation. I was on the OIC deal for a while, years ago.

A few years ago, they tried to "make private, members only" the tumblr blogs. That didn't last long as it decreased public "look-sees" and related ad revenues. That was soon changed back.

Over the years, they have deleted groups which became inactive, for whatever reasons that traffic diminished.

And, over the years, many of the posts in some groups were spammmm with duplications of the same message (usually of a sexual nature) over a multitude of groups. Not good.

If y'all get the zip files, perhaps you can sift through the postings and condense them into a "From YG" sticky thread? Or perhaps put them in a separate blog?

Just some thoughts,
CBODY67

There is a "Files" section that IMHO is the most important that I hope they include. I found myself going back there over the years just to check on some items.

The "files" section was included. However, as I had feared, only those threads to which I had contributed were saved. It is therefore critical, for completeness' sake, that all of the key Yahoo group members (@kmccabe56, @Bill Watson, @Fratzog, @polara71, @vidsal, @My70monaco, etc) do the same. We could then aggregate/share the info.

I think I had only posted my build sheet into the 'files' on yahoo which I have. Someone did a nice job of outlining what my build sheet showed and I don't have that anymore. Happy New Year!

Here you go, to start the new year on a good footing:

Welcome vidsal to FCBO!

Thanks, your decoding is very helpful. I also recall possibly Fred's outline of my build sheet with the build date probably posted to yahoo. Last time I tried to search the posts, I couldn't find an earlier outline, but it's likely similar to what you posted here in 2018.

Joel, we decoded it 20 years ago when you thought about selling it ...

That was (well) before my time. Looks like I just reinvented the wheel

As I have said before, the Yahoo group stalwarts were pioneers. Their research and writings have made life much, much easier for later-on Polara/Monaco lovers. Their expertise and generosity with advice and time are really impressive. Four Polara/Monacos later, I can’t thank them enough!
