Chrome lug nuts.

Hi guys
Just a little word of caution here....8 months ago in April , I purchased a full set of 1/2"×20 chrome acorn wheel nuts from Rockauto in Denman boxes. I fitted them within a couple of weeks of receiving them and they've not been off the car since.
I clean the car quite regularly and when washing it today I could see that pretty much every one of them is starting to rust. Just another nail in the coffin of Denman and the chinese products that they use.

Helps to wax them first, and install with a 6 point deep socket powered by hand to minimize fracturing the chrome.

The cheap stuff is all around us.

Look up McGard lug nuts. They are US made, triple chrome plated, and offer some that look just like the stock Chrysler nuts. I have had a few sets on different cars, and have been well satisfied. They are the only type I buy when needed. Also, I put a layer of masking tape in the socket first, and carefully tighten or loosen.

Impact wrenches would crack the OEM lug nuts over time. Almost all of the ones on my '70 Monaco were cracked (with rust underneath) when I got the car in '75.

There used to be some plastic inserts to us on the deep sockets to prevent such.

To me, the worse thing is the center caps getting loose and rattling!

I don't have any projects to use them on. If anybody is interested?

McGuard used to offer their chrome lugs with a "Lifetime" warranty, claiming that they were immune to impact damage or they would be replaced. They also made them in the US.

They are no longer made here and the "lifetime" damage warranty is gone from the package. A shame, because they still charge a fortune for them!

Warranty/Returns. To the original purchaser McGard LLC warrants its parts, other than chrome plated lug nuts/bolts, against defects of workmanship and materials for a period of one year. ... This is the only warranty on McGard products and no other express warranty will be binding on the manufacturer

If you have access to a show quality chrome plater, I would take my damaged lugs to him. The Chinesium plating used on today's chrome lugs is thin and I often wonder if they don't chrome over rust!

McGard chrome lug nuts for our cars do look similar, but the hex size for installing them is 13/16", not the original 3/4". I have seen lisitings on Ebay for them still saying lifetime warranty - who knows???
The ones I bought are identical to original, have a very tiny dimple in the center of the lug nut that is correct like the originals and they are the correct 3/4" hex size. The lug nuts that Chrysler now sells that are supposed to be correct to originals do not have the dimple as did the originals, according to the A12 site comments. Details in the previous thread.

The price is also reasonable. They are still available.
