What is the unique plumbing in the trunk for?
And, any idea why the engine air cleaner was replaced?
  • Are these things unique to the Netherlands, or is that fuel injection?

Its an LPG conversion tank to allow it to run on gas rather than petrol. Much much cheaper than petrol but you need to do quite a lot of miles to recoup the cost of the conversion.

Does not harm the engine I believe, may make it run smoother. I had a company car in 80's which had it and all I did to fill was hook a connector to the tank similar to petrol nozzle that locked on and away you go. A switch on dash changed from gas to petrol, could do on the move too.

Expect thats the air cleaner missing issue solved too.

Interesting

I have the same conversion set up in my New Yorker. With this set-up you can run on both LPG and gasoline (if you wish).
The cost of LPG is about 35% of gasoline.
With a current gallon-price of 6,80 Euro for gasoline, combined with the thirsty 440 , it makes driving a lot more affordable.
I paid 950 Euro's for the conversion, but that was 20 years ago.
I guess it's doubled by now.

thats a compressed liguid natural gas tank cylinder in the trunk (LNG).
its not unique to NL, cars have had LNG conversions in north america.
here in BC it was quite popular in the past.
propane conversions too.

Thanks,
I can understand why this is done, having just did the conversion. Gasoline @ 6,80 Euro = $7.60 per gallon U.S.
What is the octane rating of the gasoline at 6,80 Euro?

98; I referred to premium fuel with 0-5% ethanol.
Regular is 95, with 10% ethanol. Approximately 6 Euro/gallon

It's LPG - liquid propane gas. I run my Fiat Freemont (aka Dodge Journey) 3.6L Pentastar on it. Ofcourse it's multi port gas injection (same as MPFI) , with it's own ECM. The tank is where the spare tyre used to be - it holds 40L. You can switch between petrol and gas anytime. The car starts on fuel, heats up to about 40C when the evaporator can heat the LPG to gas form - then it automatically switches to LPG. The cost of LPG is 50% of that of petrol in Poland. I'm not a fan of LPG conversion in older cars with carbs - you never get the same performance.
