Been battling a lot of rust in the fuel. Filter will plug up after about 20 miles. I dropped the tank out tonight and here's what I got. A pinhole formed where it was damaged before when I loosened the straps and it began to slowly drip. I think I can weld that up. The muddy looking jug is the remaining gas I drained out. Need your opinions on what to do. Do you think this is worth cleaning out and saving? I saw a video where they used works toilet bowl cleaner. Do radiator shops or anyone hot tank these or do something similar? If so, what is the cost? Cheapest I saw a tank for our C bodies is $364, which is small fortune. Any better prices somewhere else? The gas gauge hasn't worked since I've had it, so I will look into that (test resistance?) and now would be a good time to spot weld a couple of pin holes in the trunk floor above the tank while its out

15 years ago i had a pinhole in my tank . I dropped it and took it to the local radiator shop. $50.00 later it was repaired and no trouble.

Gas tanks can be very dangerous to weld. You tank was scraped from being hi-centered at some point and that likely caused the rust out. This tank is probably not worth saving and should be replaced. It will probably keep rusting even if it is well cleaned because all of the rust preventative coating is gone from the inside. Many after market tanks are now available for a lot of the C-Bodies. Yes some of the replacement tanks are spendy, but this is a situation where you would want to do the job right once with a quality replacement. Replacement sending units are available from several vendors, a US sourced unit is the best long term solution and they run about $100.

What year and model is this tank from?

I agree completely. However that was 15 years ago, not sure how many radiator shops are left. We have exactly one within an hours drive of home that will even look at a gas tank, let alone clean and repair one. Good luck finding a reputable shop, most likely cheaper to repair than new tank, ....if not too far gone.

I have two within a half mile of home . It never hurts to stop and ask, sometimes they will direct you the right way...

The company I referenced Gastanks.com usually has a booth at Carlisle and offer 10% off at the show. I'm pretty sure they go to all of the events throughout the year at Carlisle since they are from Rising Sun, Maryland. They should be at the Spring Carlisle show.

Canadian sourced tanks and sending units are good quality, usually made to US equivalent standards which is all that matters. Mainly want to avoid the crap made in Asia in a complete void of quality control. Plating that falls off, sending units that have the wrong resistance wires, floats that are not sealed etc.

They make no bones about it . The Spectra name is all over the trailer.

I just had one cleaned out and lined for around 200 bucks locally although it May not have been as bad as yours. We have several places to choose from around the Motor City.

+1 you gotta be careful futzing around with a gas tank.

if you dont have $444 for that good looking replacement tank ^^ above, i used por15 gas tank sealer once on a moped a long time ago. you gotta clean the hell out of the tank. put marbles or washers in there and seal it with CLR and water or simple green or etc. cleaner inside and slosh it around. if you can power wash inside it after that. then you have to dry it like dry dry bone dry. then the treatment.

try not to die -

p.s. keep the sendo unit lock ring you gonna need it later.

It is off a '69

We have used these guy's here in MI, they seal it inside and out. It's not the prettiest but it works.
Gas Tank Renu Missouri | Gas Tank Renu

It wont hurt to get a price.
I messaged a buddy of mine who works there. They were the only ones (contacted 5 other) who actually attempted to weld an aluminum block in my 2010 SHO while it was still in the car. No one else would do it. I am highly fond of them, hopefully the price isn't higher than a new tank. Labor is $100/hr there
