Having brothers that like to collect family heirlooms is a good thing!
They collect it all and sometimes they share.

One of my brothers was visiting last night & know that I was a licensed wrench previously decided it was time to forward this to me.

It's my grandfather's "Testimonial of Merit" that he received April 20th, 1923 in Motor Mechanics.

I can recall one story of a 1930’s Caddy having overheating issues.
The owner commuted from Rochester NY to Toronto Ontario
He had taken the car to various professional shops and ended up at my Grandpas blacksmith barn desperate to find a cure.

My grandpa saw immediately that the lower hose would collapse when he revved the engine.
So being a mechanic, he knew that it needed a spring in the hose. took a piece of brazing rod, curled it up inserted it into the hose and had the owner drive it for a week or so.
The owner was real sceptical but let him do the modification.
He never charged anything up front and trusted him to get back to him and let him know if this was the fix.
A couple of weeks went by and he thought he had been taken or the repair didn’t work so he was ready to write it off as he was used to having happen since everyone was in the midst of the depression at the time.

well, as I was told, a few more weeks rolled by when a Cadillac rolled into the yard to his surprise.
The owner told grandpa that the car had never ran as cool and steadily right from the factory and pulled out a $100 bill and shook grandpa‘a hand.
Hopped into his car and left...
Turned out to be a famous businessman but his name is unknown to me.
It was the only Caddy he had seen and worked on during the time period...
