Hi,

The backup light of my 72 Imperial isn't working anymore when I put the car in reverse.
I started looking for the fusebox - relay (I don't know exactly how it is called) but I cannot find it. I thought it was located near to the steering column.

Can anyone help me out here?
Is there a wiring diagram available were I can check al electrics for the backup light?

Thanks!
Patrick

A factory service manual will help you a lot. The first step after that is purchase a test light. Take the bulb out...look o.k.? tap with your finger to see if element is broken....O.K.? then put in reverse with key on does the test light up?? if not check the switch on the transmission. Remember to place blocks on at least two wheels.

P.S. remember to use some dielectric grease in the base of the bulb and anti-seize on the threads of the screws holding the lens onto the bumper.

Hi Pete,

I have a service manual but I cannot find anything on the switch on the transmission. I don't know where it is located, I cannot find it.

1:Did you check the bulbs and secondly for current while key is on and in reverse?
2:If number one is done then check the neutral safety switch on the transmission, does it have current leaving the wires. Check off then on.
3: If current is leaving the wire headed to the back of the car check periodically tracing the wires until finding the break in the wire or bulb socket.

Remember a test light mentioned before. They are cheap and will save you a lot of guessing and purchasing unnecessary parts.

Hi,

I tested the bulbs, they are OK, elements are not broken, only no electricity is reaching the bulbs.
What I’m actually looking for is the ‘contact’ (I don’t know if this is the correct wording) that switches the backup light on when you put the gear in reverse. I thought this ‘contact’ was located somewhere under the dashboard nearby the steering wheel.

But I cannot find it, so I’m not sure now that I’m looking on the right place and if such a ‘contact’ even exists.
Do you know what I’m looking for? If so, any idea where I need to search for it?

Patrick
