Gas tank vent

I am working on my 1967 383 Sport Fury convertible. I found it has 2 vent lines. Why 2 of them?
I am thinking about F.I.would there be a problem using one of these for a return line.

Look on the passenger side of the trunk just to the rear of the wheel well. Some models have an expansion tank mounted there to allow fuel to expand in hot weather without leaking out the gas cap.

Fuel line is usually on the fuel sending unit. I do not see a lock ring or a lead for the gauge. These are vent lines, probably for a vehicle with CA emissions.

I will check tomorrow. It kind of makes sense with the fuel filler being behind the license plate.

You can see the vent tubes set towards the drivers side of the front of the tank, this is my '68 Monaco 500. Same thing with my '66 Polaras, California or normal emissions. One is short with two bends(?), the other is goofy shaped and goes through a grommet in the trunk floor.

You can in a pinch use one of the lines as a return--but there can be issues.
1)These lines are smaller than the 5/16" feed line They are 1/4" I think.
2) Use a vented gas cap. Taking away a vent can cause the tank to suck into itself or cause fuel filling problems.
3 In a perfect world,I personally, would modify the sending unit by adding the return line to it and leave the vent lines on the tank alone.
A C body gas tank is NOT cheap!!
Sending units are cheaper and easier to get compared to the tanks.

When I was looking about fuel tanks a while back, the options were: 0 lines, 2 lines, or 4 lines. The 4 lines was for the vehicles with the vapor expansion chamber, with one line coming from each corner of the tank (FSM illustration) into the vapor accumulator item. The FSM shows the 2 vent line tank to be the normal one for many years. No 0 lines tanks were in the "66, '67, or '70 FSMs, as I recall. Illustrations in the FSMs for your particular model year.

The tanks aren't as inexpensive as some, but price shopping every so often can yield some lower prices.
