Idle time is probably bad for my wallet

If I were looking for another truck it wouldn't have DEF, DPF or any other hateful EPA mandated stuff on it...I'd rebuild my 35 year old truck again or Glider it if you can still get one, or buy a 2000 and older and spend the money freshening it up

I just want an old rig that I can haul pig **** in the fall for stupid money. Doesn't need to be pretty, it just needs to work.

Very pretty truck.

I really like the blue frame, but I wonder if they did any prep work on the frame and chassis before they painted it or is the paint likely to start peeling off after a year or so? I'm also afraid of the Cummins ISX engines. They are such a mixed bag when it comes to reliability. Some are great and others are big time problem childs. This one has already had head/cam issues. A friend of mine had one in his tri-axle and had zero issues over the 600K miles and 13 years that he drove it. Others have had major problems with multiple cam failures, oil pressure issues, failed fuel pumps that wipe out the entire engine, short-lived and very expensive turbos and actuators, stuck piston rings from excessive soot, and the list goes on.

On the flip side, I have almost that much money invested in my Sterling, and it still needs another $20K in repairs that it's not going to get. Basically, trucks are money pits, and since you're going to have to dump money into a truck, it should be a nice one that you really like.

Agree that engine is at the end of it's lifespan with the emissions tied to it. Those engines just have some mystical problems that you would think have all been learned out of a Cummins inline 6.
Oil cooler studs that snap off
Wrist pin lock failures
Cummins cam failures
Head sealing and big oil leaks, of course those have always been a N series Cummins issue also.
My engine garage (Cummins dealer) claims good results with longevity after rebuild and emissions delete. Basically better gaskets, hardware and removing all the excess heat.
I am probably not going to buy, but fun to look. If I were to buy that your looking at 42-48 months of payments I don't think the engine will last that long. My current N14 probably has that in it and maybe a bit more and cost half as much to rebuild again.
For a little over a months payment I can have a brand new fuel tank on mine. By the time I burn up a years worth of payments I could have new tanks battery boxes/steps, wheels and hubs, or a cut off and the new driveshafts. Get that new welder to run some beads on it and I'm longer and better off.
Just like seeing a hot chick at Wal-Mart I'm looking and going home.

$65K could go a long way towards making your old Pete a new Pete and then some.

So being laid up recooperating from Hernia repair has got me shopping. I kinda don't want to buy a newer truck, but I'm getting old and so is keeping a 35 year old truck running every day.
What do you think?
Anyone have any leads on other trucks for sale?
I have about run out of YouTube stuff to watch and not quite up to reassembly of my 440 for the Barracuda and front suspension and brakes are out for sure on Charger till innards feel less likely to pop out.

so you think riding around in that is gonna make you healthy again...?

I never figured pig **** to be any kind of money maker.
It pays four times my hourly wage. Only work for two months, three weeks a month, but 16-20 hour days. The stepsons boss has people who only work for him during the pig **** hauling months. I could have ten months of vacation. Ain't happening anytime soon, I'm trying to become my own boss in a different field.

friends of mine are in trucking and have a fleet and once i asked when the truck is out on the road out of warrenty and the c.e.l. comes on mostly emissions related how much does that usually cost. a lot of times it is around $5000. not being in the trucking busness keeping that 35 year old truck seems to makes sense. without all the computers and sensors that is less that can go wrong. remember that guy drive that 55 year old cracker box everyday.

I have a huge question. What did you guys do to screw up the Stop & Shop account. The 9200's were the nicest truck ever. The Freightliners are a POS.

And Dave, maybe you ought to start thinking air ride, floating cab with headroom, and a decent new seat.
