If you want a genuine '68 motor, you will probably need to rebuild the one you have. Reman engines are promised "to fit" but they will rarely be a date correct engine. If yours is not rebuildable, or you are upgrading to a bigger engine, you will then need to find a '68 core and rebuild that.
The other option would be to check out auto trader or the nickel ads, every once in a while a fresh motor will show up from a wrecked car.

If you have to have a date coded engine, be prepared to hit the MoPar sites, Craigslist, Marketplace or Wrecking yards. Be patient and best of luck!

I understand you don't want to build one, but hearing a seller say it is rebuilt does not necessarily mean it it was done right. I am not very trusting, unless I know who did it.Like Reagan said, Trust, but verify.
just friendly advice!

I bought a 383 from S&J Engines. 7 yr/100k mile warranty if a mechanic installs it. I have been very happy with my reman engine. They have some YouTube vids of their facilities.

I guess I got lucky. My reman has a 67 date code like the old one. It is not something that was important to me. My car isn’t ever going to be a concourse car.

There is also CME. I think a member here had an engine built by them. Their place is near Aiken. I have been right by it. They will rebuild your engine and are pretty reasonable. I actually spoke with them on the phone before I decided on S&J.

There should be some Mopar clubs in your part of the world, or thereabouts. They might have some leads on rebuildable engines and where to get them rebuilt.

Somewhere along the line, some of the mounting bracket sets and where they attached to the block changed. Not sure of the model year break, but probably relates to the earlier '70s or so? Just to make sure you have all you need, better to get a rebuildable COMPLETE core engine from a salvaged car. With all of the brackets attached to the front of the engine. Might need some alterations to the motor mounts if it's a later model block that has the spool mounts?

The reason I mention this is that a customer bought a '56 Dodge from a national-ranked auction. Really neat car! 440, Dakota front k-frame, etc. While our tech was getting it checked-out and such, the engine developed a lower-end knock. The owner just ordered up a 440 short block. The "new" one had different mounting bosses (for the mounting brackets) than the existing block had. The tech had to search for different brackets and such to get the replacement short block to work. Didn't check the date codes on the blocks, so not sure of what was what in that respect. BTAIM

Where's the crack suspected of being? Just curious.

The crack is suspected, waiting for confirmation. Doing homework right now. It's in a shop. I can't wait too long to pull the trigger on something if it is cracked.

The original owner told me the car had been rebuilt as some point. Is a 383h factory 4 barrel. I had some carb issues and ended up going fuel injection. It exaggerated an existing issue on the timing chain and it broke. So in the process of getting a new timing chain they said it was milk shaked in there and said there was either a head gasket leak or possibly a crack. They said it didn't look ever rebuilt either. They are investigating now, no idea where a crack may be. But since this is the 4 barrel version I heard the 440 upgrade is an exact fit so might upgrade if I have to go full steam in this project. I may get lucky and just rebuild the damn thing too. I'll know soon.

If your car has A/C and you're keeping it, the 440 will need the 440 specific rear A/C mount bracket. As near as I recall that's the only caveat in swapping in the 440. 2¢

Sounds like they are correctly implying a blown head gasket or a cracked cylinder HEAD. I would seek clarification. Cracked heads are more common than cracked blocks.

i did have a cracked block once on a 1967 440. It was across the passenger side near the casting numbers. It only showed up warmed up. think it got froze once.

You'll probably need the cast front cover for the water pump too. On my 440, I had to use the front cover off of the 383 I swapped out. Mine has A/C; the front cover for that is different.
