Working on a 73 Imperial. Trying to get down to the ignition tumbler cause its jammed and cannot turn it with the key and get it unlocked to get it out of park. What is the little metal box piece to the left that looks like it has a tab on it u bend up to unloosen the turn signal piece to come out? It moves when you pull or move the turn signal lever so its connected to that some how. How do I get it out?

Thanks,

Wizard

I have no idea on how to remove that, never worked on a cruise control 73 before, but it looks like you might be able to pop the center U-shaped piece up with a pick maybe?

Does this apply to '73 Imperials? (discussing '73 Charger):
These older vehicles had a tumbler release pin which needs to be pushed in while key tumbler assy is turned counterclockwise. Look for a small hole in the column, usualy located undernieth where the lock assy is. Insert something small such as a paper clip into the homle after turning the tumbler to the acsesorry position( backwards). push in the paper clip and rotate the lock assy backwards at the same time to release the tumber from the lock assy. and pull the tumbler out.

I looked all over for the small hole to put a paperclip into it but there is no hole on the columb to release the tumbler. I know my 71 road runner had one I believe as I changed it 30 some years ago

By the way, what's that thingymajiggy near the ignition sticking out of the column?, I looked at it in my '73 and wonder what it's for?

that's the little light for the key so you can see it at night.

If that metal tab (circled) is pierced by the flat rod coming from the indicator stalk, it looks like then that the tip of the flat rod is knurled over to lock it in place?
If that is so, only way to remove it is to grind the knurl off and allow that tab to come free which in turn means the signal assy then can come out.
Personally I don't beleive this is the case, there must be some trick to taking that stalk out which in turn will free the signal assy.

Yeah, the turn signal does unscrew but I never went as far as torning it completly off. Maybe I ought to try that. It also has the wires inside it so it may twist those off while I am doing this. Someone else mentioned this on this post somewhere else I have it posted on another site. A or b bodies to see if anyone has been there done this

I need to look at the 73 NYB column i pulled apart for my 70 sport fury, will try to look into that tomorrow and get back to you. I didn't unscrew the stalk at all i do remember that much.

Okay couldn't sleep so did a bit of research, since these columns are from GM, I did some digging and found some pics that help point us in the right direction.
Note in the first pic, the small rectangular plate stays in place in the unit and has a circular pin on the backside of it. The second pic is of a cruise control lever and appears to have a notch in it?
Also, I found this description for disassembly of a GM T&T column,

I hope this helps.

I believe this it the holy grail you have uncovered here my friend. I have read it and I think the turn signal lever is my issue why I cant get the turn signal cams out. I am going to try it this weekend and let you know how it works. Thank You.

Indeed, I’m in the middle of this myself, extreamly helpfull, thanks Gary! As for the signal lever, there is another post on the forum that I can’t find, but I remember it being very simple to remove. In my ‘70 it’s held in by a screw, but for ‘73 I think some how that metal tab is spring loaded and you simply lift it up to release the lever. There were pics somewhere here, but I can’t find them at the moment.

The barrel of the turn signal stalk is threaded, you turn it counter clockwise to remove it.

You need to disconnect the 4 wire cruise control plug, disengage the wires from the plug, pull the wires up through the column, THEN you can unscrew the TS lever.

This is normal for the Saginaw built Chrysler tilt/telescope columns. Non tilt has a screw through the TS lever into the TS switch you can remove easily.

How do I get to that 4 wire cruise control plug to disconnect it?
